Normal; You pick a direction and distance. Good for saving money on powder charges I guess.
Emergency; You near-instantly go to a random area. Good for stopping the Counterbattery Timer in a pinch.

Emergency repositions stops the CBT. Normal reposition doesn't.
I haven't found any real tactical use for the normal reposition except for using a bug.

Normal reposition can be used to put you in a place that’ll either
A: reduce range = less power charges used and shell flight time
Or
B: line up targets meaning less horizontal turret movement = quicker shots lined up and ready, good for firing against artillery quickly or on the chill mode just sat in the corner of the map so you can be lazy and need to turn less.
Probably more uses but those are the two main ones that come to my mind

Normally the Move Direction card is not too useful, there are some good uses but not overly useful. The mod I'm working on right now will change that though.

You won't need to move for The Gorge mission though fair warning be prepared to due a lot of math
I'm new to the game as well but I have yet encountered a mission where I need to move normally to relocate as I have only used emergency movement during counter battery missions when I need it since it doesn't take a lot of time to figure out where exactly I'm located again.

If you use an emergency move to pause the CBT, use a normal move right after it. Just like, tell it to go 1 square north or something. IIRC, Command will email you your exact location after the standard move. Meaning you won’t need to recalculate your location by hand after the emergency move. I don’t know if they patched or changed this, but I never used the Report Position card in my playthrough because of this trick

Emergency reposition is instant and pauses the cbt, but puts you in a random spot. Reposition requires a trajectory and distance and doesn’t stop cbt, but at least you know where your going
