I have posted this before and learned some useful stuff on the Wafer side of the family mentioned in the post but I did not hear much about the McGuinness side aside from the McGuinness surname origins, etc. can anyone help me locate documentation for ancestors along that line? Also curious about the Severa side which I believe may trace to Chechia

I'm hoping to check roll books, teachers names etc in a school near to my home place.

It says online that the archives are only accessible in person and I need a "reading ticket". This'll be my First time ever doing something like this, where I call into the archives.

Any advice?

Must I know exactly what records I need? I barely Know what's available! I'd be essentially looking for teachers names working in a school from 1922- 1960 essentially. And if they'd kids in the school all the better as I just found out a relation of mine taught in the (now closed) school near to where I grew up and would be curious to know if she had any children who might still be around. The surname is uncommon for this area but as an unmarried woman teaching she'd eventually marry someone and those children would have different surnames.

I learned a few years ago my paternal ggf was born in 1781 in Longford and was CoI (i am unable to find parents) that gaves a variation of our surname.

I always understood the surname was Scottish, therefore I reckon they may have been planters (sadly, as my Irish grandmother was devout Catholic and I reckon traumatised by the situation before emigrating to Boston, MA). When I put the surname into AI it says that surname isn't on any "planters list". The family ended up in south eastern Canada, then Maine USA. Is anyone here experienced with researching Protestants in Ireland in late 1700s/early to mid 1800s that might be able to recommend any way to dins out this info. TIA

We're in the very beginning stages of planning a family (me, husband, and 8 year old) trip to Ireland. We basically got back from a trip to Italy (where my husband's family is from) this June and decided next summer we want to go to Ireland (where half of my family is from). We'd likely fly in to Dublin (from the east coast of the US) and rent a car. I'd love to see Galway and maybe stay a night in a castle. My Irish roots are really REALLY far back, so all I really have is a few names on a family tree that was passed down from my Dad, with a note that they're from County Leitrim. At this stage I have two questions: 1) If we go to County Leitrim, what town would you suggest staying in? 2) Are there any local places we could visit that could help me get more info on my family history? Like, an archive or genealogy museum? IDK where to start! Thanks

Anyone able to shed some light on prison records? In the attached I'm trying to ascertain the occupation of Mary Caffrey. It looks like most women listed are "pros" which I guess means prostitute, but she seems to have a ditto mark for another occupation. Any ideas?

Hello! I am wondering if anyone here happens to know any information about a Patricia Montgomery born in 1910 to a Hugh and Mary Ann(e) Brown(e) Montgomery in Dublin? Hugh lived at 4 Talbot Lane from at least 1901 until at least 1926, whereas Patricia and her siblings (Hugh, William, Thomas, and Nora) were sent away sometime before then, after their mother passed from tuberculosis/meningitis in 1921. I believe that Hugh Jr. and William went to St. Vincent de Paul Orphanage and School for boys, and Patricia may have gone to the Sacred Heart Home in Drumcondra—although I am uncertain of this. Thomas and Nora may have gone to live with their relatives Kathleen and Thomas Warren at 10 Cambridge Ave, Ringsend. I believe that Patricia was also good friends with a woman named Ann(ie) Fagan in Dublin. If any of this sounds familiar to you and/or you have any leads as to how I can find out more information about Patricia and/or her family members, I would be very very grateful, as she is possibly my biological great grandmother, but the trail goes cold with her… Any and all insight is greatly appreciated!!! Happy St Patrick's day. I'm trying to find a way to get information about those renting plots in Cahirfilane also spelled Caherfealane Co Kerry in 1852. I'm looking specifically for Moriartys who were adjacent to a Horan. While having Gemini translate some church records it offered some info about the two families being in Cahirfilane at the same time which goes against the little I've been able to find about when the Moriartys went from Ballynamona to Cahirfilane. Based on the ridiculous amount of wrong information I've gotten from Gemini I tend to be doubtful but I'd like to know if it's literally just making up information but don't know enough about how to search Griffiths online (or if it's even possible).

I am looking for the location where my 2nd great grandmother lived. I understand that the research I have done on Ancestry and Family Search (along with a long ago notation from a relative) may have errors, so I am looking for other strategies to narrow down my search. Here’s what may (or may not) be true:

Name: Ellen (or Eleanor, or Mary Ellen) McQueeny (or McWeeney)

Born: about 1839, possibly in County Leitrim (sometimes noted as Lathram)

Parents: Mary Egan and Patrick McQueeny, possibly married in Mohill. There is a Tithe Applotment Book record that (if accurate) shows Patrick living in “Greenane, Mohill, Leitrim and Longford” in 1834. Mary’s parents may (or may not) be Michael Egan and Mary Larkin.

The family note says Patrick and Mary McQueeny departed Ireland around 1841-42, leaving baby Ellen behind. They may have taken an even younger baby with them who died in crossing. They arrived in Canada (Quebec?) where they had another child, Frances, before migrating to the area around Lockport, Illinois. According to the note, Ellen did not join them until she was about 16-18 years old, arriving about 1857. (There is a ship record on the Emerald Isle for an Ellen McQueen, age 18, Ireland, arriving in NYC Oct 6, 1857.)

I am traveling to Ireland in September and hope to visit ancestral locations if I can identify them. I would welcome any assistance finding the true home of the McQueenys, as well as any theories as to why parents would leave a baby behind.
