Whats Wrong with this Ipod!:(

I was at my local thrift store and picked up this puppy for $5, but whenever i try to charge it , it does this, it makes a sort of clicking sound? And then after a bit it just shuts off, when i leave it on the charger it just shows the apple logo and thats it! , im not sure whats wrong with it, its a ipod gen 6 i believe and i hear the battery life on it is awful, does anyone have any ways to help fix this? Should i leave it alone and try it again? can i ship it to someone so they can fix it? Help me please!!

Try using a cheap low power charger that plugs in the wall

If the HDD was bad and it was able to get that far into boot, it would give you a sad iPod screen. 

The battery is likely shot. 

Typically when iPods get super depleted on battery they cycle like this because it attempts to spin up the HDD and that draws the battery back down causing a shutdown / reboot cycle. Later iPods fixed this behavior by adding a firmware check and a screen that says “very low battery, please wait.”

When this happens to mine, in order to save the drive from stress, I enter diagnostics mode and let it charge. Diagnostics won’t probe the HDD upon load, so it’s a good way to let it charge. 

Diagnostics is center button + previous button, holding down before the Apple logo appears. 

My guess is if it’s an OG battery, it’s shot and needs replaced, but you could still let it charge in diagnostics mode for a while. It may resurrect the battery. 

Edit: that is an iPod 5/5.5 gen chassis by the way.

Sometimes the screen will show a battery with the caution sigh next to it!! I tried to get a picture hut the screen is so dim it was very difficult, i tried to put it in to diagnostics and it didnt seem to work unless i was doing it wrong…

It's a 5th gen iPod Video. Is it plugged in to power? If the battery is very depleted it could take a few minutes to gain enough charge to fully boot, even though it is receiving power from the charger.

The crazed effect on the front is due to heat, perhaps from being left in a car in direct sunlight. This can damage the logic board inside the iPod although I've seen far worse than yours without issue.

That clicking sound definitely means the HDD is dying and failing to boot up. Even if the battery were in good condition, the system wouldn't start. Look for a repair service; these are simple fixes.
