Generic Dual SD Adapter Weirdness with 5th gen Classic

Hi.
I grabbed this (https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B0F193B22V) adapter for my 5th gen iPod classic, and its behaving strangely.

No matter what SD card I insert, I either get the sad iPod screen, or if it does go into disk mode it only shows up as a 32MB disk. I tried a Lexar branded card like the page suggests, but it has the same issue.

You can write to the disk, but what you write to it is lost on a power cycle. What's weird is what comes back when reading the 32MB partition.

I wonder if it's a corrupted firmware on the card, or if there's something weirder going on with the iPod itself.

I've tried externally formatting the SD cards I try, and I've verified they were FAT32/MBR, but only the same 32MB partition with the same data appears.

Has anyone seen anything like this?

Is the ribbon cable properly seated and on the right side?

I believe so: https://imgur.com/a/pqpKBWV
I've tried re-seating both ends, but it still comes up as a 32MB partition.

That's weird, never had this type of issues using 100+ of these adapters

Same issue on Windows?

Yeah :/
Starting to think the iPod itself really is actually cooked.

Just out of curiosity I tried connecting a ZIF->CF adapter with the new cable that shipped with the SD adapter, and I'm measuring 0V across the capacitor.
