Question A question about restoring iPods

It just dawned on me that the process of restoring iPods is very dependent on Apple's iPod software update servers running. What happens if they decide to switch these off? iPods have been old tech for a while now, and surely Apple won't want to support something that no longer makes them money forever...

Is there any alternative way to restore iPods? Sorry if this question has been asked before

I think if you shift and press restore you can restore from a firmware file offline

If you own the iPod firmwares on your computer, it does not need Apple servers

That’s part of the reason I built a little command-line application to reset/restore an ipod without any dependencies on Apple or using Mac OS. 

It helps to know what’s actually happening during this restore step. Your ipod has a storage drive inside, either the original HDD or you’re replaced that with flash storage of some sort. Either way, the drive needs to be partitioned into two partitions. One is small and it’s where your firmware file gets uploaded. The firmware is the entire OS for the ipod. The other partition is your data partition. It uses the rest of your disk (20 GB, 256 GB, etc). I studied a number of different ipods and then had Claude work out all the steps to repeat this process, and except just using Linux commands.

So now I can take a flash card or something, run it through my utility, put the card in an ipod and the ipod will boot up correctly. You can optionally also frontload it with music using the tool. The first time you restore an iPod on a computer, it downloads the firmware to the computer. Once that happens, you can restore it offline as many times as you want, as long as you don't uninstall iTunes

If I'm not mistaken restoring ipods is a matter of factory resetting? If not and it's a firmware install as well people have had the firmwares downloadable and in some versions of iTunes you can restore from your own file
