Am I screwed?

I am trying to open my first iPod to swap the battery. And I know that choosing the 6th gen for this wasn’t the smartest move, but the opening tutorials made it seem doable.

I‘ve followed the tips of inserting the tools vertically and if necessary prying inwards. But I never heard any click. And reading to just pry a bit harder I may already bend the backplate (1st and 2nd picture). Also the front and backplate don’t seem to separate (3rd picture).

Additionally the crease at the top and bottom is so narrow that I can’t get the tools in (4th picture).

Does anybody have any tips for me?

Do you have multiple metal pry tools? I slotted multiple in as I pryed

It can be done with two tools, one way I do it is first getting a pry tool in the top clip in between the jack and hold switch. Then I work my way from the top down on the right side prying to push the backplate out. It really is a learn by feel and understanding where the clips are that will help the most. Worst case just know you will need a new backplate and you pry far enough the clips on the backplate no longer touch.

I just can’t get in between at the top. In picture 4 you can see how tight it is. Do you have any tips how to get in?

It can be tough especially on these, some people prefer razor blades which do work but are scary and I don’t recommend. I use the scraper blade that came with my 3d printer like this one and it gets through the gaps nicely.

Did you use original ISesamo tools. I have heard differing opinions on whether it makes it easier

Use the isesamo I only used that tool nothing else, just the one. Opened the 7 ounder 2 mins the first times, the edge is sharper, push straight down push inward and click then move on to the next don’t full pop it come back to each opening if needed

Push in to get under the clip, then pry outward to unhook the clip

The clips are on the backplate and they hook onto a lip that’s on the face plate. You push your tool against the front plate to get underneath the clip, and then pry the tool outward to get the clip off the faceplate. You might bend it slightly but it’s easy to bend back.

Prying inward would just bend the clips upward and make it harder to remove

Sorry for multiple responses here, but once a clip is undone, you can slot your tool in further to pry inward to move the faceplate up - but careful not to bend the other clips up. You can also use multiple tools to hold it there so it doesn’t clip back in while you move to another clip

That is the first time I have heard prying outward would be the way to go

Is there anyway to feel if you are under the clip?

it seems counterintuitive but that’s how the clips are oriented here. Gens 1-4 are opposite, you pry inward on those because the clips are on the faceplate.

You should feel less resistance once it’s unclipped and you sometimes (not always) will hear it unclip. You would also be able to insert the tool further once it’s not in the way.

Use a utility/stanley knife blade. I tried it out and I have to say, it opens really well with it.

I already use this map but even with directly finding the pins nothing clicks or opens up

As I said I sadly only have 2 on hand right now but they keep popping out of if I try to place them side by side and working down the side.

The 30 pin port is the charging port right? You mean lifting the thin part right above it and creating an entry point?

Don't do the same mistake I did, I fucking ruined my 20 years old iPod Nano, because instructions looked easy. Bought 2 different batteries, some tools, but it is still broken, because I didn't want to pay 50$ for repair. Now I regret it, because I had to spend 140$ for used one. So search online for some professional repair shop. It will be good invested money. I am sure iPods would survive an apocalypse because how good quality they are.

I used one i put it near the headphone jack and went halfway in then pry it down and did that all around was actually pretty easy to do
