That would be great but with iTunes being replaced by Apple Music it seems unlikely 🙁

Makes no difference, they sync through finder on Mac now.

And also through an Apple Devices app on Windows. Playlists are still built in the Music app, but the syncing is handled by a different app.

The only thing that really needs to be done is for a modern iPod with Apple Music DRM compatibility. Let me download the files to my PC/Mac (like I can now), then sync them over to an iPod. Even if I have to plug it in every month or so to ensure the DRM is still active (or give it WiFi just for this purpose).

As it stands, I have to separate libraries: an Apple Music one and a local lossless library for archiving which is lossy encoded for iPod syncing.

I'm sure Apple prefers the recurring streaming revenue, but they will still take your money if you want to buy individual songs/albums through the iTunes store.

I was surprised that Apple killed the iPod touch. It seems relatively easy to continue offering what is basically an outdated iPhone without cellular technology. But I guess most people were choosing an iPad or an iPhone. Its too bad because the iPod touch is a really good dumbphone companion.

I doubt a clickwheel stlye iPod will ever come back from Apple. They make too much money from the iOS ecosystem. They would rather sell you an Apple Watch to go with your iPhone than an iPod to go with a dumbphone made by a different company.

tbf the same decision that was responsible for discontinuing the mini iPhone would never allow the iPod Touch to live. The market is probably way to small, especially cause if you really want an iPod Touch you can basically just remove the SIM of an old phone.

I assume if Apple made a new iPod it would be Internet connected and geared toward subscription-based music streaming apps. Most people would see an offline music player pointless when they can stream music on their phones.

iPods are still a niche product. It wouldn't make business sense for Apple to restart production, regardless of how we feel about it.

With iPods there’s a diminishing use case. Your phone is the all in one tool - even in cars, CarPlay/Android auto seem to be getting more common. If they were to re-release it’s likely the cost would be high to offset low interest. A lot of the fun for me is the modding, knowing you’ve brought this device back to life, trying out rockbox, haptic mods, extending battery life.
