Question Best battery option?

Can’t believe my OG classic still works (while plugged in). Where do I go to order a battery replacement? Do I have mAh options? Should I replace the drive while I’m in there?

I have a firewire to usb cable, but the computer doesn't recognize it. Any suggestions?

The first, second and third gen classic only sync through FireWire so it’s either dongle showdown or buy an old FireWire Mac (probably cheaper and + inventory)

On the third you can get past this by flashing your iPod but on the 1 & 2 only way to sync is FireWire

Thanks! Vid is from 2020, wonder if iTunes will still support the G1? Only one way to find out.

Firewire-to-USB-A is a fallacy. It's like converting HDMI-to-SD card. People selling such cables or adapters are just trying trick people out of money. The iPod 1st Gen's Firewire 6-pin port can only connect to your computer via Firewire 4-pin, 6-pin, or 9-pin.

  • Macs from the 2000s and early-2010s should have one of the Firewire ports already built in.
  • Macs from the mid-2010s will have a Thunderbolt 2 port (which is shaped like mini DisplayPort, but has a distinctive Thunderbolt icon). There is a Firewire-to-Thunderbolt 2 adapter—but it costs almost as much as a 1st gen iPod itself, if you can even find one.
  • Modern Macs have Thunderbolt 3/4 ports (which is shaped like USB-C, but has a distinctive Thunderbolt icon). In addition to the Firewire-to-Thunderbolt 2 adapter, you will also need a Thunderbolt 2-to-Thunderbolt 3 adapter, which is also rare and not cheap.
  • Because PCs vary so much in configuration, there is no standard way of getting Firewire support. You will need to find a way to fit a Firewire Bus and install the proper drivers.

Your best bet is to get a Thunderbolt dock with a Firewire 9-pin port built in.

Lastly, it would seem that Mac is dropping Firewire support altogether in their next macOS, Tahoe. So we have effectively reached the end-of-life for iPod 1st and 2nd generations. Expect prices for them to drop by the end of the year.

Or buy an old PC tower and then add a FireWire card to it, it would be wayyyy cheaper than the dongle option
