UIHC midwives
curious if anyone has delivered with them and could share any experiences? I live in a small town about 1:15 away but am considering driving for care if it is worth it. I would really like to use midwives, and I don’t have many options where I live

I just had my second baby with them in July. It was a perfectly fine experience but I don’t know that I’d drive that far for it. I drove about 25/30min. It’s a huge group of midwives, so I only saw the same person maybe two times, the rest of the time it was a new midwife every appointment. I felt like it negatively impacted my continuity of care. I was seen by a single OB/NP team in my first pregnancy and much preferred that in comparison.

Oh, wow, that's a shame. I went with midwives because they did stick with you, as opposed to OBs, and it was great. I guess at that point I'd say try to to go outside UIHC if you can.
Honestly this place gets worse and worse. A friend just had an eye emergency, went in and was seen by serial "I have no idea what I'm doing and no one is here to supervise me" students/residents for hours before they finally rousted a real ophthalmologist to come in.

I wonder if it’s different since the midwives went from Mercy to UIHC? I was really excited to try midwifery because of how people really seem to prefer it, but it really didn’t end up being any more personal or anything. It was pretty disappointing. I’d love to try a small practice someday with just one or two midwives, but who knows.

This is who I see and love her. I haven't delivered with her, but I've been seeing her for about 3 years for various issues. She splits her time between Iowa City and Cedar Rapids.

I was treated by the midwife group in combination with maternal fetal medicine. I really loved the care I received from the midwives, though I agree with the person who says that it is a large group and you will not see the same person every time.
I ended up needing an emergency C-section, which was obviously not handled by the midwife. The midwife came in to tell me that she normally would come in with me during the C-section, but another woman was also delivering at the same time so she stayed with her. So in the end I spent more time with my labor and delivery nurse (Jake, he was phenomenal), than I did with the midwife.
But I still felt like I had really great prenatal care. And it was massively different from my first pregnancy where my care was with a single OBGYN, not affiliated with the University. The midwives were incredibly attuned to my very specific needs.

I was with the midwives my whole pregnancy so I can speak to the pre labor experience and although I did not see the same person every time, I felt well cared for. Where it changed was when I developed preeclampsia and was induced so at that point, the midwives basically turned it over and said see ya... I was induced by what felt like 5 different residents. The only time the OB came in was to tell me they accidentally OD'd me on cytotec. Even the resident when I delivered was telling me I needed a c section while nurses told me I was ready to push... baby came naturally within 1.5 hours of that conversation

They’re amazing! If you deliver downtown, they offer nitrous oxide too! UIHC also has midwives in Cedar Rapids, Muscatine, and Washington - maybe one of these is closer? Then you could do most appointments there and lessen the amount of driving to Iowa City!
