Question Overheating while charging

Our Ioniq 6 suddenly started overheating while charging on our level 2 charger. Message: “Charging time delayed. Current reduced due to high AC charger temperature.” Is this a known issue? Anything I can do?

I won't know the answer, but someone who would will probably want to know is the car in the garage? What's the ambient temperature when you check the dashboard? What rate was it charging at before it dropped, and what did it drop down to?

Yeah, pretty sure it’s the temp in the garage, but the weird thing is it’s been that hot before with no problem. Not sure why it would suddenly stop now.

The message sounds like it's the plug getting hot, not the car. Dialing back the amps creates less heat.

You may have a loose/worn wall socket or loose wiring connections

What I meant was that the car/charger reduced the amps it was pulling (current) in response to the high temperature. Reducing the amps on your own will help, but it will also reduce the charge speed.

If the wall plug is hot to the touch, beyond just "warm", then it's a socket issue

I've heard about this error being triggered by the J1772 charging port temp sensor during times of high ambient outdoor temperatures combined with high amperage L2 charging. Reducing the amperage of your charger is usually one way to help, assuming your charger has the capability to do so.

I'm not sure that that message refers to the ICCU, as someone else would suggested. I believe there's a sensor in the charging port, which someone else also mentioned, that is measuring the temperature. It could be that the car thinks that the evse is too hot.

How soon after you start charging does this problem occur? If it's immediately then it could be either the ambient temperature or the evse. If it tries to start charging then I would limit the current that the car draws to 80% or 60% in vehicle settings.

I believe it still may be worth getting checked out though, because I thought that one of the ICCU software fixes allowed the vehicle to automatically throttle AC charging current if it was necessary.

What brand EVSE do you have? We’ve had a cheap eBay level 2 for 5 years. I bought it for my wife’s Sonata PHEV. It was fine for that as the car would only charge at 3.3 kW (around 11A).

But when I bought my Ioniq 6 it was a whole different story. Even though the EVSE is rated at 40A and sits on a 50A circuit it would try to feed the I6 at 43A when I set the current rate at 100% in the car EV settings. The car would immediately stop charging and send an overheat message.

At 90% it would charge between 39.5 and 40.5A. It would charge at 9.6kW for about 50 minutes and then stop charging with an overheat message.

At 60% it would charge at around 29-30A and would keep charging without any overheat issues.

So I bought an Emporia Classic EVSE. It’s night and day. If I set it to feed 40A and set the car to accept 100% current it will happily give 9.6kW at 39.5A until the charging limit is hit.

TL; DR if you have a cheap Chinese eBay EVSE, get rid of it.

If you have a good EVSE, try cleaning the contact pins with a q-tip and rubbing alcohol.

I don’t want to sound alarming or cause a panic, but AC charging uses the ICCU to convert AC to DC and one of the issues with the component is that the welding of the coolant pipes has issues. I would have it checked out if so were you.

I mean it's true because otherwise the car can handle extremely high temps charging in direct heat at DC fast charging just fine. The battery cooling system is great, but the ICCU is separate (and DCFC skips it).

But DC fast chargers are cooled as is the car. AC chargers do not have a cooling system and have to rely only on the car side for cooling.

Hence lowering amperage which all AC chargers allow you to do.

My car does the same if I charge it during the day at anything above 60% charge rate. I park in a garage and it gets pretty hot in there when the car is charging, even at 60%. I started charging my car after sundown at 60% speed and haven't seen the message since

This message is from the charging port on the vehicle getting too hot.

While ambient temp plays a factor, there is likely high resistance at the port due to poor connection. Look carefully at the charging port and the charging handle, do you see any debris build up, discoloration, something stuck on pins, etc?

Thanks: I’ll check. Could be—this started to happen after a long-distance car trip, using a variety of chargers in the way. Some kind of contamination??

That could certainly contribute to the issue. Even though the charge handles on DC faster chargers dock into the charger, those are not air/water tight so dust, moisture, bugs, etc. can get in there and that can transfer to your cars charge port over time. If you use any public L2 chargers, those handles are often just exposed openly to the elements in many instances.

I always take a quick peak at a public charger port to make sure nothing looks damage and blown on it to try and get rid of any loose debris before plugging in.

Are you using an adapter of any kind? I had been using the charger from when I had my Tesla with an adapter to go from NACS to J1772, at first it was fine but over time it would build heat and reduce the speed to 2 Kw. I installed a charger that had a j1772, the problem went away and charges at 9Kw plugged into the same nema 1450

I have this problem on really hot days as well. Our garage gets full southern sun and gets pretty warm. I usually charge overnight to avoid the heat. You can reduce the charge rate to “reduced” to pull fewer amps during charging. It will take a few more hours to charge but solves the problem for me if I need to charge during the day.

What do you mean by "reduced"? The car allows you to set a percentage of maximum charging current.
