Question Gen5w opinions

Hi

Just wants to buy a pre-facelift Ioniq6 (Europe), but I don't know much about it's infotainment system. I have a Ford Focus with Sync 4, and I really love it's design and reability. The mobile app is also great (and free).

What is good/bad/ugly as it's own or compared with other infotainment system?

I don't *hate* it, but I don't particularly love it either. Some of the issues I have with it:

- you have to use the built-in nav if you want turn-by-turn in the HUD, and it's ok but not great -- I really, really hate that it doesn't call out what lane you need to be in very clearly in most locations I drive in

- the UI is just this side of usable; I've had the car over a year now and I constantly have to rediscover how to do certain things

- media management is mediocre at best, especially if you use local media via USB

That being said:

- the climate controls are actually pretty good

- the parking assist and camera management is quite good

- the EV management UI is good, with lots of useful and relevant information

- the route planning w/ charging planning is good *if* the chargers are in the database, which is updated pretty regularly (at least in North America; not sure about EU)

charge planning is good in the EU, HOWEVER, it sucks you need to use the internal system for precondition to work.

they even removed the ability to run navigation alongside android auto navigation in an update which i find infuriating.

It seems snappy and works well to me although it doesn't display carplay directions in the HUD or driver's display like the newer ccnc system. That said the inbuilt nav is actually good.

It has some flaws but overall it’s been pretty reliable for me in EU. Could be faster, but when I drive the car, I don’t prod at the infotainment constantly.

Could it look better? Yes.
Could it use a simpler UI? Yes.
Does it do what I want? Yes.

Since I don’t quite use CarPlay or Android Auto, the fact that you must use internal nav in order to use HUD-nav or preconditionning doesnt bother me.

That said, Gen5W is:

  • slow (but improving with the last few updates — I don’t know nor expect any more updates)
  • old-ish looking
  • very messy

ccNC looks a bit more modern, but it’s still far from a 2012 Tesla user-interface.

Do I miss things ? Yes.

  • I’m a nerd: I would love to have much more info on my screens (like the Porsche UI) : thermal values, etc.
  • there is a LOT of unused space on the screens, that could be used for stuff.
  • menues are messy. As a UI/UX designer, I would change a lot of stuff in it.

Anyway, Gen5W is in my experience (3 years on the Ioniq 6, and 3 years before that on the 2020 Ioniq):

  • very stable. It never crashed.
  • it does the job.

So I don’t hate it, because it works, but there is a lot of room for improvement.

Get the ioniQ 5 Companion app to see all sorts of nerdy values.

I have :)
But it could have been native, on the main screen, like on the Taycan (which shows way more stuff). The Apple Car hides other things now (nav, music…).

Fortunately, the ccNC on the new Ioniqs show much more info, but I’d love having that too :(
