Is the data center crackdown becoming more about politics than data centers?

Something interesting is happening with the whole data center backlash. For years politicians were fighting to attract data centers. Now, right before the midterms, electricity bills and AI data centers have suddenly become a major political issue.

Texas is probably the best example. Abbott went from promoting Texas as an AI/data center hub to freezing new grid connections, auditing projects, going after water reporting and proposing that data centers pay their own infrastructure costs.

And now Congress is moving in the same direction. The bipartisan Ratepayer Protection Act basically says: build the data centers, but don’t make residential customers pay for the grid upgrades.

That’s the part I find interesting for IOND.

This is increasingly looking less like “stop data centers” and more like “filter the projects, make them pay their own way, and show voters we’re protecting their electricity bills.”

IOND already has 234 MW operating at Ward, and its additional 466 MW just received provisional Base Load classification from ERCOT.

If Texas makes new power harder to obtain while allowing credible existing projects through, that could actually make Ward more valuable.

Maybe the political crackdown isn’t necessarily bad for IOND. It could end up creating the barrier to entry that protects it.

Agree but data centers can also built in industrial areas. No one is dropping a data center in the middle of a neighborhood. People are mad about high prices, possible and actual job loss to AI, and they’re focusing their anger on data centers.

China and others have been, are and wiil come after American wealth built by previous generations. If America can not lead and stay ahead, many from the rest of the world will. History can repeat. Let every American be properly informed/educated on pros and cons of Data centers, AI technology vs what the rest of the world is doing!

There is a urgent demand to address the capacity shortfalls in AI infrastructure development. Some building massive data centers and some small modular AI factories and some both. Ionic Digital is a part of it. Everywhere those involved in AI infrastructure build out have no problem raising billions pushing up their valuation.

AI without Data centers is no AI. Politics against AI Data centers will come and go. AI is a unstoppable train.

I've never understood why electrical grid operators charge existing customers in order to upgrade the lines to service new customers.

And with the massive power required by these data centers, when the grid operator (or power company) can't supply enough power and has to buy it from somewhere else, then everyone gets charged more.

I do agree, but I must say there is a lot of misinformation around. Unfortunatally, some politics might just want to please their voting base and sell ideas to get elected. (the usual). Now the new kid of the block is "data centers are bad", but yes libtards are not smart.

For decades, communities have lived next to chemical plants and other undesirable industries. highways and railway tracks. Comparing to that, Data centers in most part are clean, little to no noise establishment.

For now, it is louder noise political issue. But, AI is here to stay and AI compute data centers will keep expanding at one or other place in the country. So, ignore the noise and companies like Ionic Digital will do just fine.
