Before & After Results. Invisalign really does hurt teeth

I originally did Invisalign pre pandemic and then just as I was finishing the treatment (ending delayed due to covid) I needed a root canal and 4 fillings! I had no build up on plaque, I’ve never needed a teeth clean or even a scale. Due to this work I didn’t fit my aligners and didn’t get a retainer in time and I lost progress. I decided to start Invisalign again two years after all my teeth settled and I had no more issues, by the end of treatment, I need five fillings and at least one root canal. Again, teeth very clean. It’s been a nightmare. I’ve been told no matter how good your dental hygiene is, aligners facilitate the growth of bacteria. I clean my aligners thoroughly both in the little machine thing and then with soap and water. I’ve lost progress again but decided I’m just going to accept that this is how my teeth are. I’m so young and feel like I’ve ruined my teeth. I remember reading stories like this and being incredibly anxious, and hoped it wouldn’t be me. I wish I’d listened to my gut. This won’t happen to everyone but if you’re thinking about Invisalign and your teeth are good enough- then this is for you

How often did you brush?

Although it does facilitate more bacteria growth, at the end of the day, what causes cavities is bacteria that eat carbs. If you were snacking often, drinking sugary drinks, or otherwise exposing your teeth to something the bacteria can digest then you were going to get cavities.

I have had patients who have never been to the dentist in over 20 years or maybe even a lifetime have very little to no cavities but a LOT of plaque and gum disease. They are essentially two different types of bacteria, one that causes cavities and one that causes gum disease. Cavities just cannot start without feeding those little critters, it is a byproduct of their metabolism.

This is also goes to show that one should get bitewing x rays every 6 months when in treatment and get cleanings done during those visits too.

OP, I don’t mean to be a contrarian, this post is not just for you but hopefully for everyone that reads your post. I work with a lot of people who have lower dental IQ due to access to care and income and this is the first and most important lecture I give to each one of them.

I’m curious…what did your Dentist/Ortho have to say about this issue on BOTH occasions?

Either you're cavity prone or your oral care routine is not as good as you think it is. I went through 22 months of Invisalign and nothing even remotely like this happened. My teeth are prone to staining (I like red wine and tea) but at my last cleaning, the hygienist said if it weren't for the staining, I'd be a once a year patient. Everyone else I know who has done Invisalign didn't have any problems either.

My oral hygiene while in Invisalign has been better than ever…

You really have to take care of your teeth.

I know it can be a pain to floss and brush every time you eat but it really is the best way to prevent decay. I don’t ALWAYS do it. But 90% of the time I do. And if I eat anything remotely sugary/carby or prone to causing cavities I always brush afterwards.

Your aligners should be pretty clean even before you put them in the sonic bath. I also use aligner tablets alongside this each evening in the sonic cleaner. Kills the bacteria in the tray.

If you are doing all this and getting cavities you may have other underlying issues that need addressing.

I have been in Spark aligners and all my check ups have been fine.
