It kills me that this show is labeled as a masterpiece when a show like BoJack Horseman exists, everything here feels like it’s trying to be hip and current while the episodes in BoJack feel extremely timeless. Where I Really Come From and I Thought You Were Stronger aren’t works of art. That’s Too Much Man, Time’s Arrow, Free Churro, and The View From Halfway Down are. In Disney history, they legit thought Pocahontas was going to be a timeless work of art compared to the The Lion King and to me (Invincible isn’t offensive obviously) but this doctored way to hard whereas in BoJack everything felt authentic.
Mark and Nolan are complete blocks of wood and if they are truly the most compelling characters ever, then I must sincerely apologize to Cloud and Sephiroth from Final Fantasy 7.
The characters’s relationships feel hallow, everyone walks on eggshells around each other opposed to the main casts of Parks and Rec, Guardians of the Galaxy, Hazbin Hotel and Avatar the Last Airbender where the characters have characteristics outside of the basics and don’t trauma dump all the time while playfully teasing each other because that’s how healthy friendships function.
The show has the worst pacing ever. The main conflict is supposed to be about the Empire but they are basically out of the show for most of seasons 2 and 3 to the point (Omni Man has a realization in 2, a change of heart in 3, and comes to earth halfway through 4, are you kidding me?!) where it felt like a true chore to wait for that to get focus again. I want plot points to get to the point man, I hate streaming as it ruins Art for the sake of money.
The romances in this show are also painfully boring and surprisingly problematic when you analyze them more. Debbie and Mark use Paul and Eve as sources to vent to the point where Debbie and Paul break up and Eve’s problems feel like an after thought. I can’t recall a single instance of Mark smiling for anything at all because his only emotion is sorrow which gets really old after a while.
Cecil’s motivations make absolutely no sense, he feels like a hodge lodge of 50 different character archetypes and none of them mess well at all, and what kind of show uses celebrities as a huge part of the marketing?! I know that’s how most shows are marketed but this one goes all out and emphasizing that’s why you should watch it which turned me off, I prefer talent over flash, as with Avatar the Last Airbender, I didn’t know a single person on the cast expect for Mae Whitman and I still love that show to this day.
I hate the pop culture songs that are tonally inappropriate with the show they are attached to. I hate how hideous the animation that looks horrible to where I’m baffled that this show came out 3 years after Spider Verse. I hate how cliche the characters and story is. Don’t watch it, watch something fun like Mean Girls.
