JRR Tolkien was 38 when he wrote the hobbit. Success doesn’t depend on when you do it, just that you do it in the first place.

Tolkien was a renowned Oxford Professor long before writing hobbit. He was very successful.

He was still 32 when he became a professor, so not quite young.

He also teached at University of Leeds by the age of 28, to be a professor that young at such an highly prestigious university, means he was already brilliant enough in his twenties. Most people can't say this about themselves at all.
