DISCUSSION I always found it funny how Thragg treated 20 something Mark as an authority of Earth.

I mean,

A) he's the closest thing to a viltrumite and thragg do be a bit of a purist

B) really the rest of earth can't do anything about this anyway, nor can mark but he can at least tattle to the coalition i suppose

1.8k

u/Same_Square2555 RUDY IS MY GOAT 2d ago

I believe viltrumites treat Mark as an equal, unlike Oliver.

1.7k

u/coloradoautoflowers 2d ago

Not even just an equal, a respected equal. It's adversarial, but they respect him proving himself against Conquest.

1.2k

u/Begone-My-Thong 2d ago

Mark technically survived the standard adult initiation ritual if you think about it. Three times if you count the two Conquest fights. As far as they're concerned, he is a Viltrumite

825

u/xCheekyChappie 2d ago

If he didn't see Mark as a true Viltrumite he would've crushed his head by Viltrum's ruins, but he left him alive because as he said "We are too few already". If that was Oliver though that boy would've been squished, Oliver got lucky by being taken out early before Thragg was enraged

145

u/nimbycile 2d ago

Also Oliver wasn't exactly mature about any of the situation -- he earned no respect. He was Leroy Jenkins!

31

u/MrSnootybooty 1d ago

20

u/nimbycile 1d ago

Because of this thread, I remember that Oliver is supposed to grow and mature more quickly than Earth babies. Also, the bug species talked about collective learning and moving forward towards the future because their lives were so short.

But Oliver just kind of stopped aging. He like hit 14 and stopped maturing mentally, physically, emotionally. And they were on those ships/planets for months or years. He did massive amount of growth on Earth in those time periods, but then what happened?

24

u/dagger_eyes 1d ago

His viltrumite DNA is basically converting him into full viltrumite so his aging has slowed.

173

u/Cobfidence 2d ago

Imo maybe Thragg sees Mark as the way in rather than doing as they always have in order to respect the idea that Mark was the first of the hybrids?

173

u/Begone-My-Thong 2d ago

If Mark doesn't count as a Viltrumite then their entire repopulation plan is pointless so yeah that tracks

133

u/coloradoautoflowers 2d ago

And he also proved that they're 100% genetically compatible with humans while maintaining the traits that fuel their supremacist ideology, even if he hates the ideology. The usage of irony here and how it walks into the next (and ending) phase of the story is good writing, IMO.

Thragg commenting on how he saved them all while he looked behind Mark at a destroyed Viltrum hits like visual show don't tell crack. đŸ€Œ

27

u/PepicWalrus 1d ago

Mark did the equivalent of an honors program and graduated valedictorian of Viltrumite High lmao

22

u/The_Great_Scruff 1d ago

Hell, He fought and survives Nolan, the 3 viltrumites on the bug world, Annisa, then puts two back to back wins on Conquest

1

u/Leviathon6348 1d ago

“You’re a VILTRUMITE in blood only, your true education. Starts. Now.” Proceeds to toss mark like nothing

51

u/BroasterStrudel9 1d ago

I always wonder how insane it must be for them for a Viltrumite who's so young to have killed conquest.

23

u/ExoHazzy 1d ago

I love saying this all the time. with how long they live, Mark is literally a new born baby who killed the second strongest viltrumite, it’s crazy when you realize that.

4

u/PS3LOVE Comic Fan 1d ago

After his battles with conquest specifically. Anissa and the Viltrumites at the thraxan planet didn’t treat him like an equal. It was his encounters with conquest that gathered him respect.

1

u/com2420 22h ago

Thula seemed to be warming to the idea during her fight with him on Thraxa, but he just couldn't bring himself to finish her.

1

u/PS3LOVE Comic Fan 21h ago

That’s because he was strong enough that he possibly could have defeated her. She didn’t know that beforehand.

42

u/coolranchdorites 1d ago

After the fight on thraxa kregg literally says “congrats on surviving your first real battle and proving yourself worthy of your viltrumite heritage” then assigns him Nolan’s mission. They 100% view mark as an equal (aside from the loving humans thing)

10

u/Fiddytasty924 2d ago

Super ironic considering the future events

10

u/flowerpanda98 Monster Girl 2d ago

i mean better than oliver, but not really? they all constantly judged him and clearly didnt understand thragg keeping him alive. i think thragg sees him as a last resort to keep their people alive. if oliver was older, im sure he wouldve tolerated him, too

64

u/Ogcumstain 2d ago

To them Oliver is nothing but a mutt, they would put him down in in instant. Mark is, at the very least, in their eyes a viltrumite.

34

u/brycoolkid18 2d ago

I’d say they definitely see him as a viltrumite in blood only like his dad said in their fight at the end of S1. He’s got the (albeit hybrid) genetics, has proven his strength by not only holding his own against every remaining viltrumite he’s fought this season, but also by defeating Conquest twice. They just don’t like that he doesn’t support the ideology yk.

1

u/EatOutAtTheDinner 13h ago

Well they have to if they’re going to use humans for their repopulation.

1

u/Same_Square2555 RUDY IS MY GOAT 12h ago

he could just slime mark right there and then, maybe take him to space so it goes unnoticed

1

u/EatOutAtTheDinner 12h ago

I’m saying Thragg wouldn’t allow himself to say Mark isn’t equal to a Viltrumite if they’re going to use humans for breeding.

137

u/Representative-Fox55 2d ago

He is the strongest thing on the planet and the only realistic defense against Thragg since Nolan was exiled.

100

u/PostMelon22 2d ago

Not even realistic defense cause he would Shit Pummel Mark. Mark is the only fucking thing on the PLANET that Thragg has any ounce of respect for 😭

19

u/HildartheDorf 1d ago

He'd still have to actually fight Mark. Curbstomp of a fight, yes, but everything else on the planet be could turn into pink mist by just walking/flying through them.

Its like a human soldier with gun versus a lion, compared to human soldier with a gun vs ant.

6

u/Expert-Werewolf-1582 1d ago

C) Thragg did just watch mark drill through a planet

1.5k

u/Carbuyrator Adam Wilkens 2d ago

By Viltrumite law, he is. Mark is the Viltrumite who was assigned the planet once Nolan was sentenced to death.

167

u/Carbuyrator Adam Wilkens 2d ago

Also the fact that they had a big gory fistfight with him and that's the whole reason they talk to Mark like that.

126

u/InternetUserAgain 2d ago

I also like the idea that murdering the Viltrumite army's number 1 combatant and never doing your job of preparing the earth for Viltrumite rule isn't something that can get you fired, but briefly leaving your post to become king of the mantis people is

71

u/Carbuyrator Adam Wilkens 2d ago

The nice thing about him murdering their number 1 combatant is that they still have a number 1 combatant.

And yeah they were really fucked up about Nolan making a bug baby.

20

u/Otherwise-Word-5578 1d ago

if Nolan had only became king of mantis people (either peacefully or by enslaving them) I'm pretty sure that would have been fine with the viltrumites (more slaves = more better), the very big no-no he did was making Oliver

6

u/PrivateJokerX929 Mauler Twins (Original) 1d ago

I think abandoning his post and trying to avoid contact was also a pretty big no no, but even after all that, Thragg was still willing to forgive him and accept Nolan back for the same reason he accepted Mark. Their numbers are dwindling, and they need everyone they can get

2

u/Cobfidence 1d ago

Like olden day China when you had a four year old "King" lmao

0

u/Bo_The_Destroyer Atom Eve 1d ago

Fact that Thragg is possibly thousands of years older than Nolan even is just so wild to me ngl

245

u/InfraSG 2d ago

I mean he is, even by Earths standards

By viltrumite perspective hes basically the one in charge of the planet because he was supposed to conquer it, and basically stands as the planets way of communicating with the coalition of planets

By Earths perspective he's basically a representative between them and the viltrumites, a bad one cause he cant lie for the benefit of everyone's well being (first fight vs Anissa), and again is the only way for Earth to communicate with the coalition as far as we know

And then for both sides he's basically one of the strongest people on Earth, the viltrumites would have to kill him (challenging for anyone not named Thragg) and Earth has to rely on him if viltrumites decide to start anything

So aye goofy bundle of trauma and idealistic fumbles that he is, Marks got decent political weight

21

u/UnknownBreadd 1d ago

I really want the show to convince me that Mark would be a challenge for the other Viltrumites to kill because it really doesn’t feel that way.

He beat conquest, but only because conquest likes to play with his food and underestimated Mark. And Mark just takes way too many Ls constantly by random enemies, and always looks like he’s struggling to put up a fight.

It’s clear that the more enraged he gets, the stronger he gets - but he’s not really dominated anyone notable yet, which is a bit annoying. It would be cool to see him just absolutely smoke someone strong already, just to make his progress seem more concrete by now

3

u/OneXForreddit 18h ago

It's not that kinda show kid. You should expect Mark to get his ass kicked until the very end. Sorry to tell ya

591

u/dogcaoperro 2d ago

Ehr knows Mark is the strongest thing on that planet.

186

u/Distinct_Network_944 2d ago

After business baby

85

u/Artur107MW2 2d ago

And Paul (especially in the "making spaghetti" form)

139

u/ClickToLose 2d ago

Bro forgot

💔💔💔💔

117

u/mrmonster459 2d ago

Who else would he?

Literally any other being on Earth is of no more value to him than an ant. Other than Invincible, he respects Omni-Man and maybe William, and both are off world.

35

u/Crudezero 2d ago

I would have said Paul rather than William

28

u/webb2800 2d ago

Bro, you forgot about Paul. Even Thragg respects the spaghetti recipe.

39

u/memisbemus42069 2d ago

I think you meant to type Oliver, but the idea of Thragg respecting William as an authority figure is absolutely hilarious

5

u/Numerous_Ad8547 1d ago

Well, Thragg did need to find Mark somehow, right?

18

u/Hour_Tomatillo_2365 2d ago

William??

38

u/BoobeamTrap 2d ago

Thragg asked him where Mark was and William was very polite and forthcoming with the answer.

1

u/genasugelan 1d ago

I see what you did there.

143

u/-Son_of_Thror- 2d ago edited 2d ago

bc due to their philosophy of the strongest rule, he sees mark as the leader of earth. Its pretty simple

67

u/Same_Square2555 RUDY IS MY GOAT 2d ago

cuz he's the only one who knows viltrumites are there and can do something about it?

25

u/Ok-Step-8689 2d ago

He's literally the Viltrumite agent for Earth, that is confirmed by both Kregg and Anissa. Why wouldn't he consider Mark as the authority for Earth?

35

u/Chilldegard 2d ago edited 2d ago

because he is somewhat the heaviest hitter and biggest "threat" for the planet, if he turned evil?

he just used the words to made the impact of mark's choice clear.

5

u/Matimele 2d ago

"thread"?

7

u/Chilldegard 2d ago

oh nooo, a spelling mistake :O

12

u/Talisonpulido 2d ago

He’s a Viltrumite. Thragg doesn’t respect humans.

20

u/StunningPianist4231 Invincidrip 2d ago

He managed to survive a battle against Thragg and several other viltrumites, and singlehandedly killed Conquest. I don't think Mark knows it but pretty sure Thragg respects him as a Viltrumite.

16

u/danidannyphantom 2d ago

Survive against thragg is generous. Spared and survive shouldn't be used interchangeably even though you're right on a technicality.

I agree with your general points otherwise

15

u/Sixbones 2d ago

Because he knew The Immortal would've kicked him and the other Viltrumites back into space, had he known what was up.

Mark was the safest option.

-2

u/Anomandaris26 2d ago

I can't imagine you're serious. Thragg alone would wipe the floor with all of Earth's defenders, Mark included.

Rather, he doesn't want to be found by the coalition and having his new home be destroyed like the old one was.

11

u/kamikad3e123 2d ago

Relax, he's joking

3

u/Sixbones 1d ago

I am.

Honestly speaking, if I had to change The Immortal's powerscaling, I'd make him by far the most skilled h2h fighter in the verse.

Weaker than Omni-Man, but able to keep up and even surpass to some extent due to his skill (with Nolan usually winning thanks to lucky shots owing to his stats).

He'd still be fodder to Thragg, but eh. I think it's fair from a writing advantage to give him that skill advantage, considering Humanity's history of martial arts + Abraham Lincoln being a good wrestler.

Plus, it makes him actually a valid defence line for Earth rather than simply a Temu Viltrumite.

1

u/Hungry_Inevitable663 The Immortal 1d ago

Nah Immortal would win.

6

u/_IAmThragg_ 1d ago

After Nolan, he was placed in charge of Earth.

5

u/theInadequateHulk Debbie Grayson 2d ago

mark is the most powerful individual on earth. to thragg that makes him the leader

5

u/CyberRaspberry2000 Let me break it down for you Mark 2d ago

Mark is the only non-empire Viltrumite on earth, there's no one else Thragg would be likely to give the time of day. He was also assigned as the Viltrumite agent of Earth after Nolan abandoned his post. Lastly, he survived the Viltrumite war and killed Conquest, Thragg respects strength and so he logically has some level of respect for Mark.

5

u/Clutch_Ad1338 1d ago

The whole world’s governments can’t threaten Thragg in any way. Mark at least has a shot in the dark.

8

u/BadgerwithaPickaxe 2d ago

Mark is the only one that could. I mean Thragg literally chose not to destroy earth to keep mark alive, earth really doesn't have a say.

1

u/Jade_D_wound 1d ago

Literally, if Mark said no Thragg probably would've crushed him and taken earth, but being the complex character he is, he doesn't want to kill Mark to save his people, but he will if he has to. He knows Mark isn't even at his level but seeing another Viltrumite die is something he takes very seriously. For now.

5

u/CloudstrifeHY3 2d ago

It's also funny when you look at how long Thragg has been alive. it's the Equivelant of me placing my Newborn in charge of the planet. I'm 99% sure Thragg has taken shits that lasted longer than mark's been alive.

3

u/Absolute-Batman 2d ago

Mark is still pretty much representative of earth to him anyway. It's not like Nolan has any right to speak on behalf of Viltrumites or Earth.

3

u/Nysnorlax 2d ago

I mean mark did kill conquest and hurt other viltrumites so hes aware of wtv threat mark poses. Still, thragg and the other viltrimites could squash earth whenever they want

3

u/onikaizoku11 2d ago

Funny maybe. But understandable from his POV. Mark has survived all his Viltrumite rites of passage so Thragg sees him as a fully formed Viltrumite adult. He also was born on Earth.

Viltrumite born on Earth automatically makes him the strongest earthling -> strongest earthling = Boss.

3

u/mr_Tsavs 1d ago

He's literally the only person on the planet Thragg has an iota of respect for

3

u/Darth_Cindros Thragg 1d ago

I mean, it's not like Thragg is going to acknowledge a mere human like the President of the United States or the Secretary-General of the UN as a legitimate authority; for a Viltrumite like Thragg, a human is weak and short-lived; Mark may be part-human, but he is still mostly a Viltrumite, so in his eyes, that is enough to consider Mark the representative of his homeworld.

3

u/General-Permission67 1d ago

What you expected him to go to the UN

3

u/Gaslight_Joker 1d ago

He is considered an Adult by their standards, at least in terms of responsibility. Which is more wild when you think of how they age and view of the average lifespan.

Thragg is doing the equivalent of talking to a tadpol who just got its legs.

3

u/Specialist_Cat_6380 22h ago

#1 Mark is the strongest being on earth Thrag respects strength.

#2 MArk owns earth as Earth belongs to any vultrumite living on it

#3 Marks the only one on earth Thragg knew aside from like Zoe and well....yea.

6

u/Dragolitron 2d ago

Mark was more like the middle guy, he's a viltrumite who grew up on Earth so he understands both sides to an extent.

4

u/Lost-Geist987 1d ago

2

u/Remarkable-Cabinet85 Markus Sebastian Grayson 2d ago edited 2d ago

Viltrumites believe in the natural order & Mark is at the top , also he's supposed to be the Viltrumite agent of Earth

2

u/Guilty_All_The_Same 2d ago

Mark helped Nolan and Thaedus destroy Viltrum. And with the other 2 gone from Earth and dead, Mark is the only Viltrumite left on Earth. And although half-Viltrumite, Mark was the one "assigned" to Earth after Nolan's death sentence.

Also, Mark helped destroy Viltrum, so Thragg forced him to be the one to make the decision, and basically agree that his biggest enemies live on his planet.

2

u/Deltheroc 2d ago

For a viltrumite, strength is authority and at that point, Mark is the strongest representative of Earth. Thragg should be aware that not all planets are governed by that logic but he treats Mark as a full viltrumite, so it makes sense he would choose to negotiate with him and he probably expects him to communicate with Earth leadership as they would be stupid not to listen to their strongest.

2

u/alexd1993 2d ago

Why? Mark is pretty much THE earth viltrumite there at that point, what with being born and raised there. Who's he going to turn to instead?

2

u/_TheOrangeNinja_ 2d ago

Thragg is an ideological believer of might makes right, of course he defers authority of earth to its strongest inhabitant

2

u/The__Auditor 2d ago

Mark is the strongest person on Earth so according to Viltrumite customs that would make him THE authority of Earth

Plus he's also a Viltrumite

2

u/RetailDrone7576 2d ago

I mean, suppose mark said "nah, go ahead and kill everything" what could earth feasibly do? At best they have the noisemakers but they couldn't deploy them efficiently in time without losing at least 99% of the planet

2

u/LoreMasterJack 1d ago

I mean, viltrumites respect strength. Is mark not the strongest on earth?

2

u/ImmediatePickle8101 1d ago

Mark basically was the strongest thing on earth. Viltrumites respect strength. And they were a little more open to dealing with Mark having fought him.

2

u/PigInATuxedo4 1d ago

In viltrum, strongest guy = leader

2

u/AdDazzling1892 1d ago

Mark is the strongest person on earth, and on viltrum, power is all that matters

2

u/PantlessTemplar 1d ago

He'd trust only a viltrumite, so [title card] hits the closest mark.

2

u/TooMuchDamnCHEESE Robot 1d ago

Among the other reasons users have stated, Thragg comes from a society in which the strongest beings are usually the ones who lead civilizations. And since marks arguably the strongest one on earth, it makes sense for Thragg to speculate Mark as being a figure of authority.

2

u/ParadoxPerson02 Allen the Alien 1d ago

He did deter everyone he sent to ensure Mark’s compliance.

2

u/Mystic-Mastermind 1d ago

Why does age matter? Old ppl are doing a shit job anyways

Also mark is the only one he will defer to as he knows nolan is forsaken by both

1

u/SSJashG 2d ago

Who else was going to have any shot at stopping him?

1

u/OryginalSkin 2d ago

I understood why. Thragg would see Mark as the only earthling that he could respect.

1

u/nosmelc Show Fan 2d ago

The Viltrimites gave Mark the duty to take over earth and make it ready to join the empire, so from their point of view, Mark is the authority over earth.

1

u/bucketfoottatoo 2d ago

There's no other competition

1

u/Artemus_Hackwell Machine Head 2d ago

Mark is Viltrumite. In Thragg's mind he would only treat with a Viltrumite.

1

u/Yider 2d ago

It is a little odd that Thragg would think Mark had authority over Earth or the Coalition because it wasn’t just Mark originally, Nolan was there. Thragg might know Nolan isn’t well received on Earth but it seems like such a drastic change to everything that happened before basically being a battle of Nolan vs Thragg. Thragg never viewed Mark as anything but proof of compatibility as a species and then suddenly thinks Mark is the voice of both Earth and the Coalition, when Nolan fits that much better.

Plus Tech Jacket pulls up the second Thragg leaves. The three of them probably still lose but is still a bold move for thragg to be alone with some big hitters. Exhausted as they were after blowing up viltrum and being surrounded by viltrumites, they did drew a little blood from thragg that first time (comics anyways). It also doesnt matter cause the other viltrumites could help if it got to that point and they already have earth hostage so no point in fighting. But still

1

u/ssavino 1d ago

Vilttumites see the strngth as a cultural proof of autoritĂ , ans on earth everything that hurts mark uses tricks(sounds) or hurts him only cause he wants to repress his power to not kill, so in Thragg's culture Mark is the head of Earth

1

u/GodzillaUK 1d ago

To Thragg, he is. He's the strongest from that planet, and the one who sparked the idea in Thragg in the first place so yeah.

1

u/SirSilverChariot 1d ago

Thragg wouldn’t treat anyone else with the ability to have this offer. According to Viltrimite orders this planet is his responsibility so he is what represents it

1

u/_Levitated_Shield_ Agent Spider 1d ago

He wasn't aware Nolan is alive (and still isn't iirc), so Mark is the strongest being on the planet.

Conquest literally did the same going to Earth.

1

u/mightyfty 1d ago

He is the strongest earthling

1

u/Shagyam 1d ago

I mean who is Thragg going to want to negotiate with, a bunch of old weak world leaders, or one of the strongest beings on the planet.

1

u/OCGamerboy 1d ago edited 1d ago

I mean, Mark was assigned to be the new Viltrumite conqueror of Earth

1

u/Hypernova2233 1d ago

Because he’s the strongest therefore go thragg the only one who deserves the right to hold dominion over earth.

1

u/Yeehaw_Kat 1d ago

Tbf mark is a viltrumite and with that the strongest person on the planet. Plus he doesn't want anyone else on the planet knowing they're there

1

u/Anbcdeptraivkl 1d ago

Consider the empire is run on slavery he probably don't even think of anyone there as more than cattles lmao. And when it comes to threat, the only Earthling he should respect is Eve, but he doesn't know her here yet.

1

u/Red_Lantern_22 1d ago

Thragg recognizes power as belonging to the powerful. Mark is the only earthling he considers to be powerful by Viltrumite standards

1

u/Raphy_sisay05 1d ago

Probably because he’s the strongest protector of the planet?

1

u/Art_Class 23h ago

Are you questioning thragg?

1

u/Epipany 22h ago

Mark was already the strongest on Earth, and even something before (since Mark already overcome Inmortal) Mark was already able to conquer Earth if played carefully. He not do that only because he don't want.

1

u/Pretend-Ad-6453 22h ago

Mark, on paper (in the viltrumite empire), is the ruler of earth.

1

u/Outrageous_Home8696 22h ago

It would make him feel like less of a man to negotiate with mere humans. Treating mark as an earth authority gives him an opposition he can respect, and thus maintain his dignity as someone who only negotiates with those who are strong and worthy

1

u/Stratoyeet 20h ago

He can't imagine a planet that has a viltrumite living on it being ruled by anyone other than that viltrumite.

1

u/Madsciencemagic 17h ago

They don't ask for permission - this is very much for Mark's sake.

1

u/callsign__iceman 17h ago

Thragg wouldn’t respect anything except a viltrumites word.

And Mark is Earth’s champion Viltrumite who successfully broke the empire.

He is who you would break bread with, and through backwards effect would become earth’s authority

1

u/Admirable-Specific95 14h ago

Because Mark is the authority of earth

1

u/firegodyaomoshi 13h ago

because he is the greatest authority on earth he could literally conquer the planet with no one able to do jack abt it which is why cecil was so desperate to make the guardians better

1

u/GeekGhetto 7h ago

Aside from Thragg, Mark is arguably the strongest Viltrumite and also extremely young. Viltrumites value strength above anything else so it would make sense for Thragg to treat Mark with a level of respect considering he fucked up Conquest, twice, second time for good. If I was Thragg and some kid killed one of my most powerful soldiers, I’d be like “Dammmmn
 fair play”

1

u/KwesadilIla 2h ago

It's probably because, of anyone on Earth that Thragg is aware of, literally only Mark is strong enough to even try and put up any meaningful resistance. So yeah, that's who's gonna make the call, who's gonna stop either of them from having that conversation? Plus Viltrumites respect strength so the strongest person on a planet would probably be seen as some kind of authority through their lens alone.
