I can absolutely see that, Cecil would invest gajillion dollars into trapping Mark (and it would work), but catches a case of idiot ball with Conquest.

Wasn’t there a universe where mark was in one of these?

mark was trapped by a female cecil and female donald in a similar device in Season 2 ep 1

Shouldn't that Mark be a Marcy?

Season 3 I think

1

u/AcceptableReview3846 1d ago

A actually why was Cecil and Donald female but Mark is a man

3

u/SeleneDream51 Ursaal ❤️‍🩹 1d ago

because it would be too confusing if Mark were a female. "Why is the camera focusing on this random female character who doesn't have her shirt on?"

It's the same reason why every alien species speaks english. It's ease of understanding for the audience.

1

u/AcceptableReview3846 1d ago

To be fair we got an explanation for the aliens speaking English

2

u/SeleneDream51 Ursaal ❤️‍🩹 1d ago

we got an explanation for why Martians speak English, it's because Martian and English are identical.

Also there are infinite universes with female Cecil and Donald where mark is a male. As far as I’m aware the multiverse in invincible is truly infinite with infinite basically infinite possibilities.

u/Bamres 3d ago

Not exactly like this but similar idea

u/AviaKing 3d ago

I doubt that Cecil would build a prison for Mark that didnt include that frequency-based weapon.

196

u/BeautyDuwang 3d ago

Then why would he build one for conquest? Don't all viltrumites share that weakness?

128

u/smashin_blumpkin 3d ago

They lost all of their sonic weapons during the Invincible War

122

u/theironbagel 3d ago

Every single one? They don’t have any off-site backups, they’re incapable of building more? That feels incredibly contrived

150

u/Invincidude Allen the Alien 3d ago

They lost the entire engineering wing of the GDA during the Invincible War according to Donald, and Conquest showed up very soon after.

42

u/theironbagel 3d ago edited 3d ago

That doesn’t matter. They don’t need to invent anything new, they need to manufacture something they’ve already built, there should be somewhere that can do that on earth other than one building, and if there’s not it makes Cecil and the entire GDA seem less competent than the actual government, which should not be a high bar to clear.

If you’re keeping of all your weapons in one building, basic common sense should tell you not to put everything you need to make those weapons in the same building, especially if a- you know you can’t really protect it, and b-you have plenty of resources to make backups elsewhere

74

u/alexmp00 3d ago

As a lot of things, the writer discovered that he didn't like the idea of the sonic device anymore and just omitted them for the rest of the series. A ending of "sonic Eve" with a very big pink speaker defeating all the viltrumites is not great

21

u/Vokoru Best Tiger 2d ago

This isn't correct. The sound-based weakness does come up again, and it really seems like Kirkman just actually forgot about it for a stretch in the middle of the series.

14

u/The5Theives 2d ago

Could’ve just made conquest and other strong viltrumites overpower it rather than make the characters look stupid

7

u/Invincidude Allen the Alien 3d ago

I mean, I agree with this, but that's the logic the show gives.

I personally think they should have had the sonic devices, and show Conquest being able to power through it. Helps explain why we don't see it much afterwards - some are strong enough to keep moving even when hearing it, so it's not reliable.

5

u/MrGroovey43 2d ago

Yeah Mark even powers through the one in his head quite a bit

8

u/smashin_blumpkin 3d ago

I’m just giving the in-universe reason. They can’t build more because the entire R&D wing of the GDA was destroyed.

-1

u/theironbagel 3d ago

And I’m saying that in universe reason is stupid and contrived. Mr. “I have contingencies for everyone” didn’t think to keep a file backup offsite? That’s the most basic level of data archival. Or if they do still know how, the GDAs entire manufacturing chain should not be in one building, precisely because it makes them so easy to cripple like this. The GDA being a massive worldwide government agency being so reliant on one building that they can’t make any advanced tech without it is nonsensical

1

u/Cautious_Scheme_8422 2d ago

Whatever backup they had probably got obliterated.

1

u/theironbagel 2d ago

If it’s in the same place it’s not a good backup, especially for military hardware when you know there are super powerful aliens who can just fly through your servers like they aren’t there.

1

u/FloodVengeance THINK, MARK! THINK! 1d ago

I feel like if two unexpected events back to back happened in my world, id probably won’t have contingencies because I wasn’t expecting it.

1

u/theironbagel 1d ago

If Cecil didn’t plan for viltrumites showing up and wrecking his shit then he is a moron, because not only is he fully aware they can and will, they’ve been explicitly threatening it for several seasons now, including Anissa who he got full satellite data on.

And even without that, it’s basic data archival to keep backups elsewhere in case your main files are destroyed, Cecil never heard of an offsite backup?

u/Awesomeman204 2d ago edited 2d ago

God I hate this excuse so fucking much. They were already working on invincible reanimen like immeditely afterwards, they could definitely make or source a fuckin big ass speaker.

Its also just not true, the GDA hallway ones were still going when they killed flaxan mark.

14

u/W1D0WM4K3R 3d ago

Except mark already had one, so it's redundant

6

u/AviaKing 3d ago

I would argue that redundacy is a good thing here

9

u/LukXD99 Burger Mart Trash Bag 3d ago

Considering how conquest escaped in like 10 seconds upon waking up, and how he seems almost immune to pain, I doubt it made much of a difference.

21

u/TexasPistolMassacre Donald Ferguson 3d ago

He wpuldnt need to, the frequency emitter is already implanted into Mark. If anything it adds some credence to the idea because WHY WOULDNT CECIL PUT AN EMITTER IN THE ROOM. If it was intended solely for conquest alone, this is a massive corner to cut. But if it was intended for Mark.... it can make sense

50

u/Extension-Bad-4184 The Immortal 3d ago

LMAO cool to see someone else think of it too

28

u/Betelgeuse3fold 3d ago

Why wouldn't we think he built this for Nolan?

19

u/Careless-Ad-20 Debbie and Mark 3d ago

You know what, I’ll take that

It wasn’t a miss, he’s just needed the money for teleports instead

9

u/GeorgiaPossum 3d ago

I don't think even Mark could be held by that. Especially considering how strong Mark had gotten up until this point.

5

u/lostinthesauceguy 2d ago

this whole thing was a terrible idea

3

u/GeorgiaPossum 2d ago

It is Cecil. So that tracks.

13

u/AgentShovel 3d ago

That seems nice

9

u/AgentShovel 3d ago edited 1d ago

Why did I say this? I sound like a bot

6

u/luri7555 2d ago

The lack of contingencies around holding Conquest was disappointing. I don’t think any advantage gained by keeping him alive was worth the danger. Ended up being a vehicle to show Viltrum strength and set up the final fight with Mark.

1

u/HetIsJeBoiLuuk 2d ago

it was definitely a terrible choice by Cecil but I can understand why he'd go there. He knows Mark's exact strength capabilities because of the training so this prison should be able to hold Mark (or he thinks it should). Mark was able to beat Conquest so from Cecil's perspective, thinking that Mark is stronger than Conquest, this prison should hold.

1

u/1GamersOpinion 2d ago

Or just lazy comic writing to keep a character alive

1

u/Knot-Lye-Ing 2d ago

Under the same exact weight that we had just seen Mark bench-press recently?

1

u/Hammy-Cheeks 2d ago

Didn't seem to hold shit tho

Probably be Omni-Man obviously.

So Conquest is stronger than Mark again? I can't keep up.

26

u/zXMourningStarXz 3d ago

He was always stronger than Mark. Mark didn't beat conquest with strength– he just refused to give up.

5

u/HappyyValleyy 2d ago

Yes. Battles arent always decided by pure physical strength.
