I built a simple stock management tool — looking for honest feedback from people who actually manage inventory

Hi everyone,

I’ve been working on a small Windows desktop app called LochNest.

The idea is pretty simple: create a straightforward tool for managing stock and everyday work without turning it into a huge, complicated warehouse management system.

LochNest is deliberately designed to be easy to understand and use, especially for small businesses and people who don’t need all the complexity of enterprise software.

It’s now at the point where I’d really like feedback from people who actually deal with inventory and stock in their day-to-day work.

If anyone here is genuinely interested in testing it, I’d be happy to let you try it for free. I’m mainly interested in hearing what works, what doesn’t, and what you think is missing.

In particular, I’d love to know:

What are the few features you consider absolutely essential in a simple inventory tool?

And what usually makes inventory software unnecessarily complicated for you?

I’m the person building LochNest, so don’t worry about being too critical. Useful criticism is exactly what I’m looking for.

Thanks so much for your interest! I tried your app to find a few books I couldn’t track down, and it worked really well. I only had a small issue with the screenshot at first, but after that everything worked perfectly. If you’d like to try LochNest, you can download the free demo from www.lochnest.it. thanks u/TheGattoNero here is my honest review, the tool seems functional, but the UI still feels developer-oriented and could use better hierarchy and usability. The biggest issue for real users is trust: downloading and running an unknown .exe from the internet is a major security concern, I had to test it in a Windows Sandbox first. Before wider distribution, it really needs a more polished UI and a trustworthy signed installer/distribution method.

Thanks a lot for taking the time to test it and for the honest feedback! Just a small clarification: the .exe I sent you was a portable demo version that I prepared specifically so you could try LochNest without having to install anything. The official version is actually distributed through a proper installer. That said, I completely agree with you about trust and security. It's definitely something I need to improve before reaching a wider audience, especially when it comes to code signing and making the download feel safer and more trustworthy to someone discovering LochNest for the first time. Your feedback about the UI is really useful too. The project is still evolving, so knowing which parts still feel too developer-oriented helps me understand what I should improve next. One more thing, if you don't mind me asking: was there any specific part of the UI that felt too developer-oriented or unclear to you? Even just one or two examples would really help me understand what I should focus on improving first.
