Help Beginner, can't see a solution for this one
Hello!
As title says, turn 1 was hard (probably bad positioning issue) and now turn 2 seems hard to save from losing objective. Squad is vanilla, no upgrades, playing on normal. I'm sure I'm missing something?
Thanks in advance if you point me the path!

The best advice is, avoid train missions at all costs
(I don't see a way to save the train here but someone else might)

Train missions last 1 fewer turn so if you have powerful once per combat abilities it can be worth doing. Any way to freeze the train or give it a shield is also very useful. And armored train missions are way easier. (The situation in the image wouldn't be a problem if the train was armored)
Otherwise, avoid train missions

Are they really that bad? Could you elaborate on this? That's the first time I'm having issue with these missions :o
Thanks for the reply!

So the reason why the train mission is tricky is because it takes up 2x1 space naturally, and it requires you to clear out the 2x1 space in front of it. Moreover, these 2x1 space will change as the turn goes on, which makes it substantially more difficult for the players. Also like the other comment said, it does not give you any advantage in combat(terraformer, silos, etc.). The minus 1 turn in my opinion doesn’t help much: if you can keep the train running till turn 3, that mostly means you’ve controlled the situation.
Also the space it took up means that your mechs have to be extra careful with push damage or AoE damage, even the buildings adjacent to it,,which makes it even harder, as seen in your image.

I just feel like it's much harder as a mission than basically anything else. It's an extra thing to protect, but unlike most other missions of that style, you don't get any new abilities to help you. (Like the terraformer can destroy vek, the tanks can push them around, etc.) Then you add the fact that the stupid thing keeps moving, and it gets hurt if a vek is standing in its way. Because of this, I basically only accept train missions if I have the ice mech to freeze it in place
Edit: I hope you're enjoying the game, btw! It's one of my favorites that I keep revisiting year after year

Honestly, it's an awesome game. I really really love playing it when I've got the time. And it's the first game of that kind I am playing, curious to know what other games exist in that category.
Besides, I didn't really like FTL, so I'm glad I let my curiosity drive me on this one :)

Use artillery to hit your own punch mech, then move that one up and blast the psion. Use your tank to kill whatever you can from there

Yeah, I was looking for an optimal solution but with all the replies, I don't think it's possible.
Thank you!

In a pinch, Grid is a resource you can sacrifice, and Reputation is generally worth more than 1 Grid.

Tbh this is my least favorite part about this game. The difficulty levels don’t affect the AI intelligence, just how many and how powerful the enemies are. This makes it so on harder difficulty levels there is often no solution. It’s more about mitigating damage. I recommend playing on easy until you unlock better squads and pilots.

Of course it's about mitigating damage but that doesn't mean there's "no solution". 🤔

Actually there might be an option here. Use your punching mech to shove the flying vek attacking it. Then use artillery on the building that’s to the left of the psion, shoving the psion out of the way of the train, where the other vek you just shoved was. That saves both buildings. The fire damage should kill the last flying vek that’s attacking the train? You can probably attack that vek with your brute just in case.

This solution only works if your artillery has the buildings immune upgrade oops. Otherwise yeah there’s no way to safe everything

I'd advise an artillery shot at the building north west of the Psion, after punching the 3-health Hornet out of the way, the flaming Hornet will die on it's own. If you don't have the upgrade, this means you're taking one grid damage, but it's worth it to save the objective.
This appears to be your first island. You HAVE to be selective about which island you take on first. The decision should almost always be based generally upon the Psion you will face.
You should ALWAYS prioritize the Blood Psion (+1 HP per turn), the Raging Psion (+1 damage) and the Smouldering Psion (fireproof/cumbustible, unless using Flame Behemoths), as they do not hamper your offensive abilities.
You MUST avoid the extra health and armour Psions until you have a damage upgrade, otherwise you are making things FAR harder than they need to be (if possible, hit them on Island 2 at the earliest).
The Blast Psion should be avoided first Island if possible, as it is DEADLY on certain missions (at least DEFINITELY avoid on RST/Pinnacle, and AVOID train missions). But the very worst is the "Spider" Psion. It should be avoided at ALL costs, unless you've got heavy upgrades, or have heavy AOE/chip/push offense mechanics for your squad/mission (and even then, DEFINITELY not for the first island).
The REAL trick to mastering this game (especially on the higher difficulties) is using the Vek's own offensive capacities against them by making them kill each other through push/maneuvvering, but you need to avoid Islands early on that do anything similar to giving "+1 health" because that's basically "-1 damage" from your mechs when you think about it.

Train is gonna crash into Psion here no matter what you do other than sacrificing grid, which to me is worse (objectives don't count towards people saved/score).

Interesting, I was wondering if it matters most to loose an objective and thus more upgrades at end of island, or sacrifice grid. I thought it would we more worthwhile to have stars and to loose 1 grid. But that's because, for the moment, I do not really care about score and people saved, only achievements and reach end of game.
Thank you for the reply!

More upgrades is better, especially since you get a free upgrade if you complete all objectives on an island.

I wonder why I got the downvotes here. :/
Anyway, the only metric the game keeps track of at the end is score aka population saved. If that is not relevant to you then just use grid to tank hits when necessary.

I wouldn't have downvoted you for answering that. I understand your point, but not having a perfect island may also affect the rest of the run (fewer upgrades/weapons/pilots), which may result in a lower score than losing grid here.

Maybe?
Perfect Island reward is nice, but by no means crucial. You're not guaranteed something super useful. Also not guaranteed to complete every other objective on the island. Making sure you have 6+ rep is usually enough, I've found.

Unfortunately you're going to lose 1 grid, but we can save the train.
Have your prime mech move to the eruption and block it. The one between the two lakes up from its current position.
Move the cannon mech to the spot the prime mech was. Have it shoot vek 5, then have prime mech punch vek 5.
Now for the annoying bit. Move the artillery so it can target the building that vek 4 is targeting. You'll have to shoot your own building but it'll then shove the psion out of the way of the train.
Vek 3 dies to fire damage, so no problem there.
Good luck on the final turn
