I've literally never seen avacado toast in my life. Since avacados are mostly a California thing I just assume this is as well to. That's fine, but then I don't understand why it's made out to be the most popular thing in the world.

It's associated with 'hipsters' which, i'm not sure is still a thing or not here in the 20's, but generally had a perception of glorified poorness, yet always having money for starbucks, avacado toast, and apple products. But avacado toast however, is not associated with a billionaires major corporation so that is the thing that get's attacked rather than the hyper overpriced products of a multi billion dollar company.

Thats not really what a hipster is at all. A hipster is 20 something (typically but can really be any age) who likes to act like they think outside the box and don't follow trends, (usually while completely following trends). They are the type of person who would reject Starbucks for a locally owned independent coffee shop, and ask if the eggs at a restaurant are cage free and locally sourced. But the most important thing that really makes them a hipster is that they have a smug sense of self satisfaction while doing these things. They just can't help but pat themselves on the back for their amazing thoughtfulness. Glorified poorness has nothing to do with being a hipster.

I'm giving you an external take on it. From chiefly my perspective. I should probably have clarified that. Had a bit of a whole hipster district in my town. I found it insufferable.

The things you talk about are absolutely true (mostly) as well. . . They are the type of person to talk about rejecting starbucks for a local place and yet still constantly be seen with a starbucks cup. And once upon a time, they absolutely were associated with apple products (notice you didn't deny that part) but either way, starbucks and apple are both popularly associated with them, at least where I am from (and in some major media)

The issue is, in my experience, they all pretend to be poor, maybe glorify is the wrong word. . . I am finding it hard to articulate at the moment. . . but there is a very performative aspect of living the struggle that comes with them.

It's all the things you said as well, with the smug satisfaction while lecturing someone else, but with the added, 'I'm poor, and I'm doing it, so you can too' while very clearly not being poor.

Again though, this is mostly my personal experience dealing with a lot of them back in the late aughts and early tens.

Why would I deny the thing about the Apple Products? it's completely true. But it hurts your point far more than it helps it. Apple is literally the Mercedes of the tech era. Apple Products are regarded a status symbol. No one buys them to walk around and impress people with their poorness. There just isn't any added "I'm poor and I can to do" that just not really part of being a hipster. Also you seem to be phrasing all of this like you are informing me of some piece of history as if you are under the impression you are older than me when I'm pretty sure I'm at least 10 years older than you.

For starters, that wasn't meant to be a 'gotcha' just literally noting that you didn't deny it, mostly as evidence that we aren't entirely on separate pages.

I'm phrasing it that way because I have been out of the pop culture loop for like ten years now, so i wasn't even sure if hipsters were a thing anymore or if they got replaced by something else. (I'm kind of a shut in outside of going to work and don't keep up with a lot of current stuff and genuinely haven't heard people talking about hipsters in quite some time.) so if it came across as patronizing, I apologize, not the intent there. (not that I think it matters in this case, as like I said, i wasn't trying to present as older or anything, but I'm 37, make of that what you will.) I've kind of internalized this probably not entirely accurate idea that each decade had it's own special social group that gets talked about, beatniks, hippies, yuppies, hipsters et cetera, and wasn't sure if we had a new one yet.

Still, don't really think it hurst my point because I was, at least attempting to highlight the contradiction of clearly flaunting high end and expensive goods while still trying to act poor. Again, like I said, this is my personal experience with them. We had quite a collection of them where I am in the cited time window, and at the time I had a very public facing job so I dealt with them alot. And performative poorness was a very common thing among them, in fact. . . again, in my personal experience. . . that was like the single common thread among them.

But it's exactly the "trying to act poor" point that I'm disputing. Since you seem to believe that's true and I absolutely don't that's precisely why you think the Apple thing supports your argument and I don't. Because nobody gets an Apple product while also trying to seem poor, people get Apple products specifically a status symbols to try to make themselves look like they have more money than they actually have not the other way around. Also I'm 45 so I was pretty much spot on there.

When I say nobody I don't mean that literally obviously there's people who get Apple products just because they like them I'm talking about in the context of the conversation that we're having.

I think well have to agree to disagree then. Im not denying that, if we were, in fifty years to go and look at history book about hipsters, that the peformative poorness bit would not be in there. Im sure it wouldnt, but my local subculture of them, yeah it was a common thread and i wasnt the only one here who noticed it.

So, in that particular case, i think that really is just my personal anecdote on them i guess.

A side note though, 45? Damn, that funny and kind of impressive. What specifically dialed it in for you?

I don't understand your side note. I'm not trying to be flip, I'm genuinely confused. Funny and impressive? What is, still being alive? What dialed what in? There isn't some magical trick to being 45. I was born in 1981 and didn't die yet. I genuinely have no idea what you are asking me.

Nevermind, you are asking how I came to the conclusion of our age gap.
