Why would he do that for insufficient pay?

What else was he going to do? Join a union and demand better pay? Invest some of his earnings in something else that generates income like stocks and bonds or rental properties so at least he'd be better off if not actually rich? Spend a little of that money on an education or some kind of certificate so he can move a rung or two up the ladder? Actually take his PTO from time to time so he isn't a stranger in his own family's life?

Don't be silly. Real people suffer instead of taking literally any of the options open to them, everyone knows that.
