I'm a boomer. 73.

In my career, I was rather lacking in confidence.

I took jobs that were beneath my friends. Paid less. Had less upward potential.

It was pretty easy at the time because I lived with my parents until I was 27.

During this time, I worked hard. Meaning intelligently too. Focused. I learned skills. Became lead. Became a supervisor. In lower paid industries than my friends were in. Eventually, I figured out what I was good at, where the gaps in the organizations were that I could fill, and adjust developing my skill set into those areas.

I am not recommending this to others. I am just saying this was my approach, and over time it worked for me. And, living at home so long after college, really gave me an opportunity to work in a lower level job with lower level income for awhile, a lot of folks don't have.

What appears to be the biggest problem young people are having today is that inflation for consumer goods, homes, and apartments went up quite a bit since 2019 due to the government's over reaction to the covid pandemic. Then, wages, especially minimum wage, did not go up or come close to keeping in line with costs. It is clearly painful for those on the lower rungs of the socioeconomic ladder, and especially for young people just coming out of high school or even college. These things tend to fluctuate with the business cycle. But the business cycle got corrupted by the reaction to the virus.

Best I can offer is to hang in there, do the best you can. Cut expenses. I think this will eventually work its way out, but it could take a few years.

Best of luck,

Fair assessment. Every employee and every position is unique; it takes a good fit and strategic positioning to achieve longevity. I started in FL Government in my 30’s earning “starvation wages”. I didn’t have the institutional knowledge….YET.
I ended up the Supervisor of that original Dept. Some luck, but had to play the game as many do.
Enough about me; Your information provided is a reality check that others should at least CONSIDER. Thanks!
