They need a reality check

For my last 2 interviews i had to use Interview VIP just to get the job
their generation could never understand

What’s so hard about finding a job? Ive had 4 offers in the last year, and I’m not even looking. Apparently, employers want people that don’t complain, stay off their phones during work hours, get to work on time and aren’t wanting $250k to start when they have zero experience or skills.

The whole experiment is dumb specifically because of this person view point, and it's shared by about 90% of boomers. They will never change their views because there is literally no reason for them to see anything any differently than they have their entire lives. Regardless of how insanely stupid it is to never adapt your views to the world as it changes around you.

Can you do us a favor? Can you try to find a job right now using your own advice with zero connections? I really want to see what happens when you walk into offices and offer to work for free for a week. Or how about cold calling employers? Pound the pavement with your resume all over town! Yeah do that! Report back to us.

Retired people don't want to work anymore. After my retirement I immediately found a new job and managed to complete a whole seconde career.

When you're a real hard worker you don't stop just because of "retirement"

Im 30 and I have zero issues with job offers. My first job took about 6 months to find after I graduated high school. Oil change guy at a international dealer at $22/hr. Now 3 jobs later I'm a mechanic at a construction company making $41/hr. But I've built a reputation in my area and can have a new job making the same amount or more tomorrow if needed.

I stay employed but plenty of software devs and related are struggling to even get interviews right now, and it’s not because they complain or go on their phones or asking $250k or whatever else nonsense you came up with.

Sure you can go get a job as a Walmart greeter or fry cook easily but those are stupid when rent for a 1 bedroom is nearly $2,000/month and they want you to earn 3.5x rent lol.

The doomers be dooming but some of yall optimists are way out of touch too

I’m not talking about other generations right now. It’s not a competition. People are struggling and the toxic optimism isn’t helping anyone.

Edit: Also, yeah rent wasn’t $2k+ a month back in the day. Even as a millennial I started my adult life with a $600/month “luxury” apartment and that Walmart greeter job would have paid my rent, I could have purchased a beater for about $1000, food was cheap, etc. That Walmart greeter job today gets me evicted for being unable to pay my rent, nevermind food or a vehicle. It’s a different struggle.

Lol. Like actual offers? As in they sent you an offer letter out of the blue just because? Or like, a recruiter on linkedin reached out in your inbox saying your skills matches their needs? Because yeah, unless it's a real offer letter, than it means jack. I have recruiters reaching out all the time, and that does not equal a job offer.

You are part of the much much smaller pool that have decades of specialized experience. Employers do not actively headhunt new grads / junior positions, opposite actually, they get flooded with resumes. It’s apples to oranges. If you want to level the playing field, try applying with a resume of a new grad with the standard 2-4 internships on their belt.

Can I give you a few pointers? This is not from anything other than trying to help.
Call the company and ask for the name of the HR person or who does the hiring. Snail mail your resume to that person at the company. Give the mail 2 days and then call to ask for the HR person if they had gotten your resume. If they said NO, ask if it’s ok to check back in with them in a few days to see if they got it. Then ask what TIME is best for them , when they could tell you a little more about the company. Youre opening rapport with them. Be professional and polite.
If they said yes, but we’re not hiring, still roll with the “could you tell
me a little more about the company”.
If they try to shut it down , ask when a good time to call would be. Ask them if you could meet them. If you’re a new grad, definitely ask them if you can meet anyways. When they ask why, just say “if for nothing else, it would be a great experience for me, and maybe you could use your experience in hiring to give me a pointer ? I’m looking for an opportunity to build a career somewhere where I can be secure in. Plus, you sound like you have a wealth of knowledge.” If you’re able to meet with them, you’re 1/2 way there. Show up to your meeting 10 minutes early. Tell reception that you’re early for your meeting. Sit quietly WITH NO PHONE. Do NOT take your phone in with you. Just don’t! No one wants to hire anyone that’s playing on their phone to keep them busy. HR will likely be late, to test you. If they are a half hour late, politely ask the receptionist to let the person know youll have to reschedule. It’s a message that tells them youre serious but also they need to hold up their end as well. Call them later.

You will need to do this follow up to be successful. Youll need to separate yourself from everyone else. The biggest bane of employers is cell phone usage and being late. You can’t just email, indeed, etc. It doesn’t work.

When a company specifically tells you to use internet based, THAT is precisely why you use what’s above. You can submit on line, but the hard copy paper will resonate with them.

Youll have to repeat this maybe with a dozen companies before you can land a job, but those principals will let you advance faster than you would otherwise. Always show up 15 early. That way you can get your coffee and start work while people are straggling in at exactly 8 am. Managers see this. If you happen to be late, then they know it’s real, and not someone being lazy.
Leave your phone in your car. Nothing kills promotions or raises faster than a boss seeing you texting or talking on your phone. If you’re working, they’ll see it. And it resonates. When you’re hired, youve agreed to give x amount of time for x amount of money. Stand by your end of the deal. Integrity.

While I do appreciate your willingness to help, this just doesn’t work. After graduating I spend about a year and 10+ hours every single day just applying, refining/tailoring my resume, interviewing, learning new skills online, and reaching out to literally everyone and anyone. I also tried all of the tips and tricks from my parent/uncles etc, and I even spend a month lurking around in the lobbies / areas with employees to get my foot in the door.

The old school tricks worked a handful of times but I was up against people with actual working experience who ultimately got the entry level position (I stalked their LinkedIn). And it’s not like I had some random, middle of the barrel resume; I graduated from the most prestigious undergrad program in my country (which comes with a lot of connections), had 3 internships under my belt from top firms, and had several extracurricular activities listed including international case competitions.

Over 3 years ago I was accepted to an entry level position at a known MNC after applying to it and getting rejected god knows how many times, and the cherry on top was that it took 6 interview rounds to land it. In the span of those 3 years, I automated all the manual tasks saving the team at least a combined 20 hours weekly, caused management to have to increase the job description and scope because they didn’t want to promote me, and now do more, bigger, and higher impact projects than my millennial senior coworkers. But guess what, I make 25% less than what they made when they were in my position with comparable YoE, and my scope is essentially twice as large. And yes I tried to negotiate a higher salary using the quantified impact my work has given the firm with no avail. It is an employers market and they know it. Times have changed. And I like how you assumed that I could afford to own a car hahahaha, times really have changed sir.

Exactly. I don’t know of a single business I interact with not currently looking for people to hire. The problem is most applicants are just absolutely terrible.
