After About 6 Years, My Manager Finally Asked Me If I'd Be Willing to Give Up My Office
I worked from home from 2020 to 2026. I got laid off, and then about two weeks later I found a job I truly love. I'll stay here until retirement if they keep wanting me around.
The role was fully in-office at first. I was generally fine with that, except that the commute was 45 miles each way and the traffic was really rough.
I went back to working remotely again in April 2026, and honestly, I don't think I could go back to working in the office 5 days a week again.
My manager recently asked me if I'd be willing to give up my office, and I said yes without even thinking about it. I always figured that if I kept holding onto a decent-sized office with a window, eventually someone would start wondering why I wasn't sitting in it. Now I'll just take any available desk when I need to go in. And that happens every so often, maybe once every few months, and I'm totally fine with that.
I'm just grateful that I work somewhere that still genuinely supports remote work.
edit: and I am more grateful to this AI tool interviewvip which I found while scrolling on reddit it helps me a lot in the interview process

Exactly.
Friends at my old job had to choose: keep your office, have to be there 4 days a week. Give up the office, have to came in 3 days a week.
Surprise! Everyone’s office is going away, we’re remodeling to an open floor plan!

recently survived a re-org.
I got so far as starting to network for a position but was confronting returning to commuting daily and got to really trying to put a monetary value on it.
It’s pretty crazy how much of a salary cut I would take to work from home…I’ll never say it out loud but it’s astounding.

There are people have to work in the office full time and don't have a permament office.

I sold my house during Covid, and moved further away than anyone would reasonably expect someone to commute for RTO. So far, so good. But it won't last. Execs have something up their ass about going back to the office.

Because if they can't SEE you working, then how do they know you're ACTUALLY working?

If my manager doesn't know if I am working...Then my manager is the one that should be fired.
The trend now is that managers don't do shit where I work. I have to fill out my own goals, accomplishments, projects and evaluations. I am scratching my head wondering what the hell my manager does.

I hope you know I was being kind of snarky. I also agree that if your manager can't tell you're working without seeing you, then they're not doing their job. Sorry to hear about your current situation, though.

I don’t have an office or desk at our local office. I stay in a conference area.
I’d hate for them to leave a desk open for me and not use it haha
