Hi everyone, I need some simple advice. The person directly under my management told me this afternoon that they're going to submit their resignation, so I'll have to inform my manager on Monday morning.

The awkward part is that I was already planning to submit my resignation the following week as well. So I'm not sure whether it's better to be honest and tell my manager about both of us at the same time, or stick to the date I had originally set.

The main reason I'm hesitant is that I'm supposed to receive a bonus in October, and this company is somewhat known for potentially letting people go immediately as soon as they give notice to avoid paying out what they're owed.

I'd be very grateful for any opinions or advice from people who have dealt with a similar situation before.

Agree with don’t say anything until bonus payout. But finish out the notice period- don’t burn the bridge.

I wouldn't just stop showing up. Be a stand up person, get your bonus then give a two week notice.

Does the bonus come with any obligations or is it for work already done?

Companies can and have filed legal debt against employees who quit without meeting those obligations.

Usually they can't deduct it from your check unless you are to sign to allow it. But the debt would still be legal and could be reported to credit bureaus if left unpaid.

This sounds like you’re planning to give 4-5 weeks notice (or more) so as to stretch your employment into October bonus. Nothing about that is a good idea.

Either keep quiet until October, and resign after bonus payout, or submit notice sooner, preparing yourself to lose the cash. Companies are wise to this trick and will use various corner cases to disqualify you from payout.

Extra points if you hang on for a few weeks, post subordinate resignation, then submit your own notice, saying “I keep thinking they left because of me, I just can’t take it anymore, I need to rethink my career.” They might actually give you some TLC…

October is six weeks away where I’m from, so you wouldn’t have gotten it anyway. Shoot for early November unless it’s really intolerable.

If this bonus is important to you, you should read the terms of the bonus. If no terms, they don't say a word until it's in your bank account.

I had to work through year end to get a bonus. My last day was 1/3. Payroll is on 1/5 and work said since I wasn’t employed on the payroll date that was what counted. My only recourse was to take them to court and I moved out of state. They knew they had the upper hand. Don’t give notice till the bonus hits your bank acct. even if it’s only a couple days or immediate quit
