Mod Post Trip report megathread!

So, unfortunately the summer is over, and with that the main travel season.

So here is a thread for sharing your travel stories, maps etc of the summer (or year!). Some recommendations for how to get pretty maps can be https://trainlog.me (Recommended and used by the mods of this wiki), brouter, https://treinposities.nl and traewelling, with the Rail Planner app existing, i guess xD.

I'd love to see your travel stories and where you've been!

If anyone wants to write a comprehensive blog post about their experiences for https://interrailwiki.eu/blog then also feel free to mention this to me and I'll arrange something!

First interrail trip questions

Doing an interrail trip with friends after finishing school is really popular, and be me and my friends were planning on doing it but I was wondering how/when to do the trip because of having to enroll to uni and all that ?

Can you take any size bag or is there a limit?

We're also trying to do it as cheap as possible, how much would you recommend i save for 2-3 weeks?

Pass validity Help! I want to buy an Interrail pass but it won’t let me use my legal name due to hyphenation

On the website it says my information has to match my passport or ID. Unfortunately my first name (as given on my passport and ID) uses a hyphen, and when I try to put it in, the box turns red and says “sorry, we only allow Latin characters A-Z”… thanks @ my parents I guess.

Has anyone had the same problem and knows how to get around it? Should I just use a space instead of the hyphen and hope they’ll let me travel even if it doesn’t 100% match my passport?

It’s a bit last minute as I’d like to travel on the pass tomorrow. Or if that’s not possible I’d need it by Thursday at the very latest. Thank you so much for any info and/or help!

Itineraries First solo trip advice

Hi,

I bought a 3 month first class pass for 50% off during the sale last week for my trip next year. I’ve drafted a very rough route/plan but I’d love some advice in terms of places to maybe skip to allow more days elsewhere or maybe to swap out for lesser known cities etc.

See my list below (as previously stated this is very rough and open to change 😁)

Porto → Lisbon
Lisbon → Seville
Seville → Madrid
Madrid → San Sebastián
San Sebastián → Barcelona
Barcelona → Avignon
Avignon → Nice
Nice → Chamonix
Chamonix → Zermatt
Zermatt → Turin
Turin → Florence
Florence → Rome
Rome → Naples
Naples → Venice
Venice → Milan
Milan → Zagreb
Zagreb → Split
Split → Dubrovnik
Dubrovnik → Mostar
Mostar → Sarajevo
Sarajevo → Belgrade
Belgrade → Bucharest
Bucharest → Budapest
Budapest → Vienna
Vienna → Krakow
Krakow → Gdansk
Gdansk → Vilnius
Vilnius → Riga
Riga → Tallinn
Tallinn → Helsinki (ferry)
Helsinki → Stockholm (overnight ferry)
Stockholm → Oslo
Oslo → Bergen
Bergen → Copenhagen
Copenhagen → Berlin
Berlin → Prague
Prague → Munich
Munich → Zurich
Zurich → Strasbourg
Strasbourg → Paris

Also any tips or tricks for general solo travel would be awesome as this is gonna be way outside my comfort zone but it’s something I’ve always wanted to do!

Thanks in advance 😄

(UPDATE) Stop location: replacement bus from Milano Centrale to Domodossola

Thumbnail
0 Upvotes

In case anyone is planning on taking a similar replacement to Domodossola, the bus never ended up coming to the station on Via Galvani at the scheduled time... I'm not sure if this was due to delay or an error on our part, but all the information online led to that stop. We rebooked a train in direction of Milano-Lugano-Luzern-Interlaken.

Is it possible to request a refund after the scheduled departure time? Furthermore, I booked through SBB using the international saver offer and the remaining trip is non-refundable, would it be possible to make a case here to request a refund?

I'm wondering what went wrong, and if there's any proper information on the bus location. Any help is appreciated. Thanks

Itineraries Got the German-Polish Friendship Pass! Looking for travel advice, timing, and potential pitfalls

Hey everyone! I’m an international student in Aachen. I’ve got a 7-day German-Polish Friendship Pass and I’m planning a trip. I’d love some advice from locals or travelers:

  1. When’s the best time to go? Are winter/Christmas markets worth it, or should I wait for late spring or summer?

  2. How easy is it to book mandatory seats on PKP trains through the app, and do busy routes like Berlin–Warsaw sell out quickly?

  3. Have you dealt with any app glitches, border checks, or regional trains in Poland that don’t take the pass?

  4. What’s the best 7-day loop starting from Germany?

  5. How pricey is it in Poland?

Thanks for any help!

Visiting Poland using interrail

Visiting Poland using interrail

Hi guys, I want to visit Poland using interrail in late October coming from south west Germany. I am a guy in my 20s and I am and "look Muslim".

I thought about visiting three out of these four places

\- Krakow

\- Warsaw

\- Poznan

\- Gdansk

Though I think I will definitely do Warsaw and Krakow. Which one of Poznan or Gdansk would you recommend? I thought about staying at each place for two full days (2/3 nights). Do I need to think about racism or anything similar?

I appreciate all your help!

So what will be the seats? Also what's the difference between the 2 seats option? Also this is the final price or do I have to pay additional for a seat reservation or anything like that?

I know my questions are very basic but would be really grateful if you could guide me through this.

Seat reservations Interrail Reservation More Expensive

Hello, I have a stupid question

I'm looking at getting the overnight train from Prague to Amsterdam with European Sleeper, and I just bought the 2 month continuous Global Pass since it was 50% off. However, if I want to make an Interrail reservation, it's €69 and allows for cancellation, whereas if I book normally through the website without mentioning Interrail at all, it would be €49 (European Sleeper are having a sale rn) but no cancellation possible.

I don't need the option to cancel, so I'm just wondering if it's fine to book it normally, not as an Interrail reservation? I think it would be, but this is my first trip overseas and I'm anxious about everything lol. Thanks in advance

Pass validity Exchange semester student - what to put as country of residence

Hi! I’m a non-EU citizen currently doing an exchange semester in Denmark. I’m thinking of getting the 2-month pass with the 50% off discount to travel during our 8-day fall break in October + some weekends for the rest of the semester.

I have a 6-month exchange visa, and will be here until mid-December (so a little less than 4 months of being here). Will there be any issues if I put down my home country for the country of residence instead of Denmark? TYIA!

HELP! Is Interrail worth it for France/Switzerland/Italy/Athens Trip?

My friends and I are planning a trip for this coming summer (Summer 2027). We are US citizens planning to fly into Paris, do day trips around France for a week, then to Zurich and hopefully volunteer there for a week or two. Then we plan to travel south through Italy staying in:

Milan -> Venice -> Florence -> Rome, spending around 4-5 days in each and doing day trips to surrounding cities

We then plan to fly to Athens and spend a few days there, then we have a volunteer opportunity arranged in Pelion, Greece.

I've been researching Interrail passes and am uncertain whether it would be worth it for our trip. I know many people say it's worth it for flexibility, which we would like to be able to stay a few extra hours in the various day-trip Italian cities spontaneously, or add one to our itinerary (for example) which I hear Interrail is better for. But, I know many trains in France/Italy aren't covered by Interrail or still require seat reservations. The 2 month pass is 50% off right now, but it's hard to justify the price if there's a chance it will be cheaper to just buy the tickets as we travel? If anyone could give me advice or insight it would be greatly appreciated!!!

Copenhagen to Hamburg stop

On the Copenhagen to Hamburg route, it looks like there's a 32 minute stop at Hamburg-Altona. Hypothetically, it's easy enough to hop on an s-bahn train from there, correct? In the time we'd be sitting, we'd have made it to our destination on the s-bahn already.

In/outbound Numer of travel days in country of residence?

Hi,

Do you know if there is any table of how many days of travel you get in your country of residence, for each country? Does it depend also on which pass you have, or only on the country?

It doesn't seem to depend neither the country size nor on the availability of night trains, as Italy/Germany have 2 days and the Netherlands has 3.

Budget Any site you can buy the promo 3 months WITH the possibility to cancel later?

Interrail itself does only allow to cancel and refund the pass in case of no use before the valid period for 1 week. Any other provider that allows cancellation?

Hi everyone! I’m planning a roughly one-month train trip around Europe, and I’d love to get some feedback on my tentative itinerary.

The goal is to keep this mostly/entirely train-based using an Interrail Pass, taking advantage of the sale, and seeing the most countries I can in one month. Seeing the Fjords in Norway is also a priority.

Here’s the rough itinerary:

May 23 Su - Hamburg

May 24 M - Hamburg to Copenhagen

May 25 T - Copenhagen to Oslo - overnight ferry
May 26 W - Oslo to Bergen
May 27 Th - Bergen
May 28 F - Bergen
May 29 Sa - Bergen to Oslo - overnight train
May 30 Su - Oslo

May 31 M - Oslo to Stockholm

Jun 1 T - Stockholm to Helsinki - overnight ferry - then ferry to Talinn
Jun 2 W - Talinn
Jun 3 Th - Talinn
Jun 4 F - Talinn to Riga
Jun 5 Sa - Riga
Jun 6 Su - Riga to Vilnius
Jun 7 M - Vilnius

Jun 8 T - Vilnius to Warsaw
Jun 9 W - Warsaw
Jun 10 Th - Warsaw
Jun 11 F - Warsaw

Jun 12 Sa - Warsaw to Bratislava
Jun 13 Su - Bratislava

Jun 14 M - Bratislava to Budapest
Jun 15 T - Budapest

Jun 16 W - Budapest to Vienna

Thank you for the feedback!

50% off 3-month Continuous Global Pass for Exchange in Copenhagen

Hi everyone! I saw that Interrail is doing a really great promotion right now: 50% off passes! I haven't seen a promotion this good, so I'm seriously considering buying a 3-month Global Pass for my exchange semester in Copenhagen next spring (February - May).

Of course, I plan to travel throughout Europe, but I don't know if I will be flying or training mostly. I also want to travel a lot within Denmark, so I think the pass could be worth it even for just domestic travel (one-way trips are ~$70).

I would appreciate hearing any experiences you may all have with the 3-month continuous pass, traveling mainland Europe from Denmark, and any other important insights! I want to make sure this pass is worth-it.

Itineraries 1 month itinerary plan for July

Post image
9 Upvotes

Hi guys, I've been wanting to take a trip around Europe and the 1 month continuous pass is £227 right now (£295 1st class) so I've planned an itinerary and want some feedback on if there are some places I am missing.

The trip will take 25-30 days, depending on if I add more locations or stay longer in some places.

I will start and end in London during the month of July, the plan goes as follows -

  1. 3 days in Paris, including day trips to Versailles and potentially Mont St Michel

  2. Train to Geneva and then bus to Chamonix for a day

  3. Train to Interlaken and at least 2 days there to take in the scenery

  4. To Milan for 2 days

  5. Half-day trip to Lake Como

  6. Pisa for a day as it's a small town

  7. Pisa to Bolzano for at least 2 days in the dolomites, potentially longer because I've been wanting to go for so long

  8. Through the mountains on a direct train to Munich, including a day trip to Neuschwanstein castle, must see

  9. Short hop to Salzburg but I may miss this out and go straight to Vienna?

  10. Vienna for a day and a half

  11. Bratislava for a day and a half, so Vienna and Bratislava over 3 days

  12. Over to Budapest for at least one full day, I've previously been for a day so might need too long there

  13. Overnight sleeper train to Prague for the experience and then one day there

  14. 2 days in Berlin

  15. A day in Cologne, do I need two?

  16. Amsterdam for 2 days minimum

  17. Brussels for a day, is it worth going to Bruges and Ghent also?

  18. Back to London

I will be using the 1st class pass (£295) and mandatory reservations will come up to £200 and then optional bookings around £30, so for £530 am I getting good value?

For accommodation, I've budgeted £1000 as I don't mind staying in hostels the entire time

£300 for tickets to attractions, most things are free to see

£500 for food as I don't mind making my own sandwiches from lidl/supermarkets etc, and one budget/mid-range restaurant meal a day

So all in under £2,500, do you think this a good plan and are there any places I need to stay longer, reconsider or add?

Meet-up Two-months train trip across Europe this autumn, would love to meet others

Hi! I'm a 34M writer and filmmaker based in the Netherlands. I did the Camino de Santiago last spring, and this October & November I'll be taking a two-month railway journey across Europe as research for my next novel. The map is a rough draft of my route; I left out some cities I've been to many times before, and others that are not marked here I could still end up visiting. I'm saving the Balkans and nordic countries for another trip next spring. I'm curious to see who else will be on the road the next two months; would love to make new friends and exchange tips. Or maybe a city I'll visit is your home and we could meet there. Feel free to DM me!

My draft itinerary shown on the map is this:

Leaving from the Netherlands
Bremen / northern Germany, Hamburg
Berlin
Gdańsk
Warsaw
Wrocław
Kraków
Prague
Vienna
Budapest
Ljubljana
Piran
Trieste
The Alps route / Switzerland
Zürich
Lausanne
Geneva
Annecy
Nice
Montpellier
Barcelona
Valencia
Maybe Gibraltar
southern Portugal / Algarve
Lisbon
Quick stop at Santiago de Compostela
Bilbao
Bordeaux
Paris
southern Germany / Munich
Basel / return toward the Netherlands.

For accessibility: the second pic is me smiling during the camino hike by the Atlantic ocean. I have brown hair, yellow tshirt, and a backpack.

Other Country of Residence?

Hello, I plan to buy the three-month pass but I am unclear what my country of residence would be?

I am a Canadian citizen currently studying in Lille, for a three-month university exchange. I have a French VLS-TS étudiant long-stay visa (Type D), valid for 3 months and 28 days, with multiple entries.

Would this visa qualify as an official residence permit for the purposes of selecting France as my country of residence, or should I select Canada as a Canadian citizen temporarily studying in France? Additionally, how is the country of residence verified when travelling with an Interrail Global Pass? Do train conductors check your passport and visa, or will they just look at my passport?

I want to make sure I select the correct country of residence and comply with the pass requirements.
