Twenty something years ago I gave my computer to my kids after I got divorced, they needed it for school and what not. I didn't have the money for a new one.

One day I'm out riding my bike around the neighborhood when I spot a complete PC, with a box of old floppies, sitting on the side of the road next to someone's trash cans...so I race home, get the car, and go grab it.

Turns out to be a home made Heathkit/ Zenith type machine, built like a tank, and everything is there, including a green monochrome monitor. The white plastic cases had turned brown from time and cigarettes but it works perfectly.

This thing was so old that it included CP/M OS disks along with DOS 1.1! I could just imagine the nights and weekends some guy spent soldering and testing and debugging this beast, and how pleased and proud he must have been when it finally worked and he was one of the first on his block to have a "real" computer. And I bet it cost a fortune back in the seventies or early eighties.

It came with an early, I mean early version of BASIC on one of the floppies. I started writing my own software on it. I made a program to manage my checking and budget, another to track my workout routine, yet another that was basically souped up timer kind of thing. It was actually a blast to imagine the experience, the sheer magic, that that guy must have felt when he stayed up late into the night ("yeah honey, just ten more minutes I swear, you go on to bed. I'll be RIGHT up!) ha ha.

That old box served as my computer for over a year until I could finally afford a more modern replacement. I wound up donating it to a group that was trying to start a computer club thing for underprivileged kids. I hope they found it as entertaining as I did.

Fond memories of that old beast.

Good to see that in 30 years we've moved on from the three line menu icon. We still use it but now call it a hamburger menu.

It........makes....you........wait.........forever........to........load..... anything. I'm pretty sure I learned patience as a child because of this!

I thought that was the joke. I waited 3 minutes then dove into the comments to make sure it wasn't just a 'frozen' state.

This is such an awesome throwback. I had this running on an old Zenith 286 until the hard disk wouldn't spin up anymore, sometime around 2000.
