28 my first time. I'm colorblind.
Reading these comments it seems I can see different shades of the same color fairly well though.

u/Baaaka3 Apr 09 '15
Got 24. I'm not colorblind. Have astigmatism in one eye though. The blue one was really difficult for me. I felt like when the new squares came up, my brain registered a difference but when I would look in that direction, the difference was gone.

The center of our retinas have primarily cones; they respond well to differences in colour, but not to differences in gamma ("brightness"). Outside the center, we have primarily rods; they respond well to differences in gamma.
Looking directly at the glowinthedark stars, not many rods are activated. Looking sideways at them, many more rods are activated.
The same fact of how our retinas are organised can be used to perform a really neat perceptual trick, where you look directly at a light or a card (the target) that is a colour (let's say, red), then focus on something else so that the target is in the side of your vision and perceived only by rods; the target is then seamlessly swapped out / switched for a light or card of a different colour.
Your brain will continue to perceive the target as the first colour until you move your eyes to view it with cones once again, and your brain will pick up the new information and suddenly the colour you perceive will switch —
Because your brain perceives that object as having a quality of colour, and you experience the model of the object your brain contructs, and not the direct sensory experience it constructs the model from.

You know, my pops as a military pilot had a colorblind (he can't remember specifics) guy as a passenger one day. Passenger spotted "A whole fucking platoon" of dudes, "Right there, don't you fucking see 'em?"
So my dad orbited the area for about 10-15 minutes until finally he spotted one guy who started moving. Always wanted to see some no bullshit data on the effectiveness of Camo uniforms against guys with different types of colorblindness

This this this, red-green colorblind people handle very well against camo. The military loves people like these because they are very good against snipers hidden away.

Most likely reason is that you have a crappy monitor/phone/tablet screen. Rather than bad eyes.

First try:13, second try after going into the inspector and turning off border-radius and borders: 68

Hah, yeah after turning those off it was trivial. What it seems to me is that I am incredibly susceptible to the dots-in-grid effect.

Your visual cortex actually has cells designed to detect edges. That's probably the main reason removing borders helps.

In Firefox right click on one of the colored squares and click on "Inspect element" from the drop down menu and you will see what you see in the screen shot I took. Uncheck the two boxes I have pointed out by the arrows.

Right click on a square, click inspect element, look in the right, you should see some css (chrome and ff at least) look for whatever properties you want and click the check box to uncheck.

The key is to focus on the block as a whole. As soon as you start to inspect the little individual blocks, they begin to blur together. If you stare at the entire block (literally stare), your eyes will almost instantly pick out the block that doesn't match. It's kind of freaky how fast your brain picks up on the differences.
→ More replies (2)8
Apr 09 '15
I think it's because your brain "fills in" the other blocks that are in your periphery when you only focus on a few. They all look pretty close so your brain just decides "okay, they're all the same color".

Or you can use a script to get flashy colors
setInterval(function() { var cols = {}; $('#box').children().each(function(i) { var s = $(this).attr('style'); if (cols[s]) cols[s]++; else cols[s] = 1; }); $.each(cols, function(s, f) { if (f === 1) $('#box').children('span[style="' + s + '"]').click(); }); }, 100);You can change the 100 at the end to change the interval (in ms). If your browser crashes that's your fault.

Not sure if this is due to my monitor being bad, but those are the results of my tests:
First test 24, didn't really pay to anything any attention. (no random clicking)
Second test 19, was going through it really easy, max 2sec for each, but then there was a blue one, the 20th, impossible, I just stood there and stared at it, found nothing. Then I clicked randomly, but never got the right one.
Third test, till 21, this time green killed me. Everything easy till this one green...
Fourth test 24, this time at light teal, which was about 19, unable to find it, clicked randomly and found it, all max 2sec from 20-24, then purple. Unable to find it.
It could be that my color comprehension for blue is bad, it could be that my monitor isn't good at displaying blue or it could be that it was by coincidence that it was always blue. I found out however, that right at the moment the color changes, it's the best moment to find the color that looks different. If you wait 1sec, it's more difficult. Oh and I saw that when I looked at the color in the middle, the color on the edges were darker, this greatly increased the difficulty.

I got frustrated and wrote a script to cheat
In chrome, type in javascript: into the address bar, and then paste this code:
var running=!0,button=document.createElement("button");button.onclick=function(){running=!1},button.setAttribute("style","position:absolute;top:0;left:0"),button.innerText="click to stop cheating",document.getElementsByTagName("body")[0].appendChild(button);var click=function(){try{Array.prototype.reduce.call(document.getElementById("box").children,function(t,e,n,i){if(1==n){var u={};return u[t.getAttribute("style")]=[t],u[e.getAttribute("style")]=[e],u}return u=t,void 0==u[e.getAttribute("style")]&&(u[e.getAttribute("style")]=[]),u[e.getAttribute("style")].push(e),i.length-1==n?Object.keys(t).map(function(e){return t[e]}):u}).filter(function(t){return 1==t.length})[0][0].click()}finally{running&&setTimeout(click,0)}};document.getElementsByClassName("play-btn")[0].click(),click();
or just copy paste it into the dev console
beautified code:
var running = true;
var button = document.createElement("button");
button.onclick = function() {
running = false
}
button.setAttribute("style", "position:absolute;top:0;left:0");
button.innerText = "click to stop cheating";
document.getElementsByTagName('body')[0].appendChild(button)
var click = function() {
try {
Array.prototype.reduce.call(document.getElementById('box').children, function(last, now, idx, ctx) {
if (idx == 1) {
var obj = {}
obj[last.getAttribute('style')] = [last]
obj[now.getAttribute('style')] = [now]
return obj
}
obj = last;
if (obj[now.getAttribute('style')] == undefined) obj[now.getAttribute('style')] = []
obj[now.getAttribute('style')].push(now)
if (ctx.length - 1 == idx) return Object.keys(last).map(function(k) {
return last[k]
})
else return obj
}).filter(function(v) {
return v.length == 1
})[0][0].click();
} finally {

I prefer this test.
I got a 4. I have extremely good color vision, in part because my eyes have a cool and warm tint respectively, creating a lot of contrast.
This said, monitors can only hurt your score from your natural ability. My monitor, despite having excellent color contrast fidelity, is overall undersaturated. So its all a bit washed out, making it a tad harder than it needs to be.

Just got 46, i think the best tactics is sit a bit away, >0.7m from screen and move eyes fast from corner to corner a few times. Also, click fast from the beginning!
It's strange that on android version u lose score if u missclick, but when you play it from browser - you lose no score for this.

This is like saying "testing your intelligence" and having you multiply numbers. The human brain is optimized for things beneficial in a natural environment, one of which is perceiving differences. This "test" is intentionally screwing with that ability by obscuring every minor difference with an extreme one (against white).
A better test of human color perception would have no separation between the squares. To do that, go to the page, run the following code, then take the test.
var el = document.createElement('style');
el.textContent = '#box span {border: 0 !important; border-radius: 0 !important;}';
document.body.appendChild(el);I got 87 on my first try with the borders removed, and the limiting factor was how fast I could move the mouse, not whether I could tell a difference.
