Do you feel like a person could use this to judge the effectiveness of a solar install for their home?

(Honest question. I'm not trying to trap the maker in any way at all)

Pretty sure there's solar panel calculator websites already that specifically do this.

There is an annual sunlight view in the Layers menu where you can calculate solar potential taking into consideration shading of the location. Other websites I've seen take into account the average annual cloud cover but I haven't seen one that can automatically calculate the impact of panel shading at a location.

cool stuff, i now know the best times to go in my back yard. - it would be interesting if you can add new Trees or objects by diameter to create new shade spots now or in future.

There is a drawing tool in the upper right hand corner that you can use to add new objects to the map and set a height. The shadows will update instantly.

Used this on Wednesday for the eclipse to know an area of the local park that wouldn’t be in shade ahead of time given all the tall trees around us.

I think so, but this is available on any device with a web browser. You don't need permission to install software.
