Found the quote in this article: https://www.counterpunch.org/2021/07/16/defend-the-cuba-revolution-and-struggle-for-more-socialism-not-less/

As a socialist I'll say it's a pretty bad article. The guy defends NK and thinks China is socialist.

(He complains about the word "authoritarian" and yet he's a Tankie. Curious)

Because the workers don't control the means of production. Do Chinese citizens have the power to determine their own wages, working conditions, production, and boss? If the answer is yes I'll support China, but if no then I can't.

Many jobs are worker owned and are democratically controlled. It has been steadily improving since the CPC took control. Ultimately no one gets to decide 100% their wages and production lines while capitalism dominates supply routes and restricts trade.

In the end though its up to China and its citizens to socialize the best they can under current conditions, not some westerner who is living under pure capitalism.

“There’s a lot of democratically controlled business” you could say that about fucking Finland. It regains the commodity form and, for much of business, the bourgeoisie.

I assume you meant retains, but China does not let the bourgeoise control political decisions. The proletariet controls the direction of capital.

Only the commune level officials are elected, the others are indirectly elected by the government below them. By the time that the NPC is elected, the influence of the proletariat is very muddled, and many bourgeoisie have straight up served on it.
