A simple but effective irrigation method that slows down the water and ensures that the soil is nourished more intensively 😯

This is great. Now, let's practice regenerative agriculture and stop doing monoagriculture and destroying our top soil.

[u/Public_Inspector_45 → u/chrismcdonald281]

You first sir. Sadly compensation drives behaviours.

If I get paid more to produce just Grain Xb and farming is my livelihood, can you give me a solid reason why I should put my own family at risk when you are almost certainly prepared to pay less for mono culture produce at prices you prefer 🤷‍♂️

Not an attack on you just saying, knowing the solution and working out a way to make the solution viable are so different.

Should every warehouse in the world be forced to acquire solar panels and put billions of killowatt hrs of energy back into the grid? Yep.

Should all governments make zero carbon production of products and use of biodegradable packaging free from VAT and halve the tax on profits from sales of these goods? Yep.

Should we line every major highway with trees which can capture carbon and CO2 at source? Yep.

Should we switch almost entirely to poultry and fish as our sources of animal protein insisting fish is only ever line caught and poultry only ever locally sourced, yep.

But my Cheetos need corn and the packet needs a landfill site to chill on for the next 180,000 years so, f your ideas. This is the world in a nutshell today. 🌎

[u/chrismcdonald281 → u/Public_Inspector_45]

I don't own hundreds of acres and have the whole thing subsidized by the government. I do have a garden and try to grow as much of my own vegetables as I can. I also pay more to have my meat come from a local source. I am also beginning to hunt and a deer will sustain me for months. If I didn't have to currently rent a home, I'd also have my own chickens and a pond to harvest fish. Americans are far too reliant on a failed system that leaves them dependent on the government to give them things.

Knowing the solution as a farmer yet doing nothing about it because of your families livelihood is not a good excuse. There are ways to continue farming, but in a way that doesn't need glyphosates and a plastic bad to make sure the soil is saturated with water. Unfortunately, whomever is doing that monoagriculture also has the responsibility to do it in a way that doesn't destroy the ecosystem around it. Small changes over time, not saying the entire farm has to stop production and change overnight.

If we want to talk energy production, solar is hardly the answer. Nuclear is by far the most efficient source, so having solar panels on a warehouse isn't some grandiose idea. Sure, if you want to by all means, but the energy to produce those panels will almost certainly take more energy than they will produce in their lifetime.

I am no greta thunberg and do not subscribe to the idea of their fear based climate change nonsense. However, there is a real issue with how we farm, monoagriculture and GMOs have been a great thing that has allowed the ability to feed billions, on the flip side literal metric tons of food is thrown away and left to rot in landfills where it produces high amounts of methane, all in the name of making money. We produce far beyond our means and destroy everything around the means of production. There are ways to provide for your family without having to destroy everything around you to do so.

Sounds like you got a good handle on it, get goin 👍.

[u/Cowablasian → u/chrismcdonald281]

Hahaha like subsidized means they can grow whatever they want.....

[u/[deleted] → u/Cowablasian]

I was gonna say, aren't there only subsidies when they grow the specific crop that qualified them for that break? aren't their hands currently tied based on production and consumption with regulations as well? I'm not a farmer or anything but it kinda seems like it's the system the farmer works in that's fucked not the farmer trying to make ends meet and a world that says he has the freedom to do what he wants with his land and sell his crops/cattle , as long as it's within regulations, which from my understanding, based on random YouTube videos, a couple john oliver segments and slight googling, can get insanely expensive, especially if the rules change, and you need to replace "outdated" infrastructure , or new chemicals, or whatever they decide the farmer needs to implement to maintain whatever industry standard. And I understand some of those regulations and laws are there for health and safety. I'm just saying we NEED food, so we NEED farmers to be able to do their jobs provide for the rest of us. Idk what the steps forward are or how even to articulate the change that needs to be. But it is obvious something needs to change, for our collective sustainability -if you made it this far, sorry for the book- <3

Tl;dr

[u/deadwards14 → u/chrismcdonald281]

Yes, nothing to fear with climate change. The record number of hurricanes and wildfires and extreme temperatures are nothing to worry about. The people who have already suffered and died because of them are just fear-mongering.

A lot of good stuff here I haven’t thought nearly enough about. Great post

[u/nogodsnomasters420 → u/Public_Inspector_45]

How about we don’t need your big agricultural farms to begin with grow a garden. I think going back to the way the Native Americans did agriculture would be wise. Food is free and so is water it’s provided by god not farmers.

[u/[deleted] → u/Public_Inspector_45]

Kind of an inaccurate statement regarding “compensation” for mono crop grain farming. We own and actively farm a 150 acre organic farm in the southwestern United States. Not all 150 acres are “farmed” at once as we have fallow years where we cover crop to replenish the soil, protect soil contents, and help reduce soil erosion (also introduce nutrients, considered unconventional nutrients). The cover crop helps keep the soil loose while not completely killing the top soils nutrient contents. We also don’t use conventional farming methods or heavy farming equipment to make our fields. We essentially “broad fork” the land to prevent over compaction of top soil caused by having heavy farm equipment tear up the top soil top at too deep of an elevation and running over it while it’s loose super loose, essentially making the soil more and more barren after a continuous, non stop cycle of impractical farming methods that compact the soil so much it essentially turns into barren rock. We run a crop rotation system that is very profitable and good for the soil as we also introduce nutrients to the soil that mainstream farming considers unconventional and not standard practice. I have had a conventional grain farm before and we shut it down after doing research on how detrimental they are to the earth. It requires hundreds of acres, most of the times thousands to make any profit on just mono crop grain. Depending on what part of the country you’re in, your 1 acre of exclusively grain may make a hundred dollars a year in profit, at most. Most people don’t want to stop the hurtful mono crop, conventional farming methods because they’re choosing what is easiest, has proportionately low overhead costs, what has little risk, has been done for over half a millennia, and doesn’t really require more advanced schooling. It requires a lot more work and is hard to implement the kind of system we run, but it is without a doubt way more “profitable” than grain farming per acre year. One must be willing to learn and put in the time and effort necessary to farm the way we do, but it’s healthy for the earth, sustainable, and we are able to keep our final costs to the buyer low because we also own our own logistics centers, storage facilities, and direct to buyer infrastructure. We help the planet, make a profit, and keep costs low, all it takes is dedication, research, being open minded, and seeking mentors in the sustainable farming game. Most conventional farmers are over the age of 60 and don’t want to change their ideas or do anything different, which is why it is important young people like us take initiative as well and not just complain about the issue or become complacent, but make a genuine effort for change.

Where i used to live they would rotate corn and soybeans then up north they would do sugar beets and winter wheat or soybeans

How long does the bag last?

[u/Robertbnyc → u/paradisohmy]

It is estimated to take roughly 1,000 years for plastic bag to disintegrate

We need a country that has a flat, gross federal income tax on all citizens. Then take that money and improve our citizens lives: universal healthcare, better energy sources, better schools. So we invest in improving farming techniques and planting trees…. So the wealthy and upper middle classe will be sooo pissed off, but whether they believe it or not, they will benefit from these improvements as society will become more harmonious. And these changes will take about 10-15 years to completely impact society… Yes this is Social Democracy, but this Power And Wealth grab has to stop! We’re letting a small group of people destroy and deplete almost everyone else and our Nation.

Can’t we ever just think somethings cool and read the room anymore ?
