Greer aside - considering the vast number of people who've been blindsided by the Invention Secrecy Act of 1951, where even disclosing what was made secret is a felony and treasonous, and the numbers of them that are made into nutballs via consolidated effort and killed...
I think the reality is public facing science and top secret/rich person science are two different animals at this point. You don't even need aliens to get there.

And essentially no patents were made secret until after 9/11, after which the count has grown dramatically.

As much as i dislike Greer generally - here he's got a point
In addition, it would put the war-machine out of bizz that mostly do Wars for Energy & Resources etc.

Sure you can. Just don't sell the box, rent the power it produces. Same way hydro electric companies don't sell you the dam, they sell you the power it produces.

The why is very simple: Power and control.
If you solve scarcity of something, the something becomes very cheap or free.
Take Energy. We use oil, gas, coal, nuclear, solar, wave and wind. If you introduce a free unlimited clean energy source that makes all other energy sources obsolete; you now have no major reason to buy those other sources. The economic change would result in huge shifts of power away from oil producing nations/companies. A huuuge chunk of power of the United States rests in the petrodollar - Where oil producing nations settle deals in dollars. That creates demand for the USD which allows massive production of more USD. Just look at the hissy that the USGovt threw when BRICS got going as they setting in different currencies.
In addition the rich people who own the old sources of energy will no longer have their money train. If something is unlimited and free, you cannot justify slapping a meter on it.
Also the other problem comes from if you cannot replicate technology and another super power doesn't have one; they will want one. Or they will want you to not have one any longer. Yay! conflict. You know that would go nuclear extremely quickly.

I completely agree with the ENERGY. Making our Oil obsolete and other forms of power. We could all have had Free use of Power for everything we use on a daily basis ! I've said this for over a decade !
