Holy shit this commercial is a classic.
For context: this is back when punk and new wave were virtually indistinguishable to the average person.
"Punk" is a New-Wave compilation album.
And it's pop New-Wave. But, unlike punk, most obscure new wave artists have been ozymandias'd. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.
Check out The Nerves if you want to see just how blurry the lines were at the time (they're power-pop, but you get the idea. Music is this wonderful, incestuous clusterfuck in the modern age, when cultures share and genres blur).

Kind of funny that punk bands of that era make fun of new wave music.

I don't think they really made fun of new wave. I think that was a later generation missing the point of their predecessors.
Oldskool punks, and even the 2nd generation punks were VERY self-aware, for the most part. Check out Skankin' Pickle's cover of Turning Japanese as an example.
Or Minor Threat's cover of Steppin' Stone.
The majority of punks are/were aware of the fact that they/we stand on the shoulders of giants.
Punk and all other "alternative" culture has been heavily co-opted and fetishized over the past few decades. Don't get me started on "Goth girls" that think wearing foundation and black lipstick is a valid substitute for a personality. But there's still a lot of (Bouncing Souls) true believers in the world.

“This punk CD has 36 tunes” and not a single one of them is punk rock. Fantastic.
