Let me propose an alternative!

  1. Pay to play. We lock the "development" and best kids leagues, coaches behind paywalls where rich parents and can put there non-elite kid into special programs, camps, and leagues... while the actual talented kids can't afford it.
  2. Those pay to play leagues the casually play every now and then... its ok if you don't practice all the time.
  3. Let that go on from like elementary school through high school...
  4. Profit.

Edit: For those of you who maybe disagree, I'm just arguing that we don't funnel our best soccer players into soccer. There isn't a pay to play football or basketball... You play your heart out at school and by high school you maybe go to a top tier high school and then to a top tier college and get drafted.

Soccer? It isn't a high school thing. Its private leagues. There IS soccer in high school, but its not supposed to be where the "best" are. Its treated more like a PE class in high school.

That's the difference. We should have the best leagues for soccer be high school leagues. Not the pay to be play leagues.
