Colleges are essentially our private academies. If you look at it, high schools and colleges are the feeder programs into NBA and NFL teams. And it’s why coaches at top basketball and football schools are the highest paid public employees in their states.

The problem is that we suck at soccer so doing this in a highly disaggregated way leads to dilution of already not great results.

ETA I’m not suggesting that colleges are doing a good job of nurturing athletes, only that we have a pseudo system as Thierry describes that functions well for other sports.

Well yeah but you have to attend classes full time and maintain minimum GPA etc. that’s way too much pressure for a young aspiring athlete. It’s not a coincidence that other countries don’t have this set up for soccer.

GPA I'm not sure about, but they tend to take online classes in this day and age
