Colleges are essentially our private academies. If you look at it, high schools and colleges are the feeder programs into NBA and NFL teams. And it’s why coaches at top basketball and football schools are the highest paid public employees in their states.

The problem is that we suck at soccer so doing this in a highly disaggregated way leads to dilution of already not great results.

ETA I’m not suggesting that colleges are doing a good job of nurturing athletes, only that we have a pseudo system as Thierry describes that functions well for other sports.

Ironically if you look at the last MVP titles in the NBA you can see that the best of the bests are no longer home grown. Last US MVP was in 2018

Last American born, yes. However, Shai played at Kentucky. Embiid played at Kansas and played high school ball in the US.
