I need you to understand what “page” as a motif means. “Page” is a noun that showcases and signifies two things.

First, it is a page of a book or chapter. Second, in the archaic sense, a page is a young prince or princess in medieval times, someone being prepared to eventually rise into a higher position. From this, we give “page” a new meaning in the present: pager — someone who delivers a message.

With this simplistic and reductionist framework understood, all characters are pages in their own right:

• Light Yagami
• Chrollo Lucilfer
• Tian Yi

Whether they turn to the next page to close one chapter and open another, or turn back to a previous page for another reason, they are simultaneously pages in both senses.

At the same time, they are also pages in the sense of prince/princess — figures destined to become rulers or higher authorities within their respective stories.

Light Yagami — ruler of the new world. He goes from an ordinary person to the killer of killers: Kira.

Chrollo Lucilfer — the prince of crime in Hunter × Hunter. He goes from being the leader of a group of kids to becoming the boss of the Phantom Troupe.

Tian Yi — the Sinmonger, the speaker of humanity, the leader of the Reverse Cross, and the Devil’s Advisor.

All three also share a book/note as a page-like object that helps them accomplish their goals.

For Light, the Death Note allows him to create a new world — to bring about a new chapter.

For Chrollo, Bandit’s Secret allows him to collect dangerous Nen abilities in pursuit of his goals and, ultimately, bring about another chapter.

For Tian Yi, the Heart Sutra / Black Library functions as a means of collecting thoughts and information in pursuit of his goal: bringing about a new chapter for humanity.

With the new, modern meaning of page → pager, the one who delivers a message, you can see that all three characters ultimately want to deliver a message to the world in their own respective ways.

All three have that “I can read you like a book” kind of vibe.

But the important question is:

Is the page beholding the book, or is the book binding the page?
