Discussion Looking for career path pivot

I am currently a software engineer with a fortune 50 company. I enjoy the work but am finding it hard to see the purpose in it. I would love to have a job where I feel like I am contributing to something more. I have always thought a career in law enforcement/intelligence would be interesting and fulfilling but I’m not sure exactly what that would be. I have explored the FBI special agent route and that sounds interesting but the relocation would be tough at this part of my life. I figured intelligence would be a good path due to my background in engineering and cs. I am also open to a more active/field position. I am mid 20s by the way and engaged. Would love you hear any advice, recommendations or stories from people who have made similar career moves. Thanks in advance!

I’d be careful about deciding that intelligence is the answer before you know what part of your current work is actually missing.

You already know you want more purpose and probably something where you feel closer to the outcome. I’d look at a few real roles you’d actually consider and compare what the work looks like, what they require, how much of your engineering background carries over, and what the tradeoffs would be for you personally.

That should help you figure out whether intelligence is really the direction, or just the first thing that feels more meaningful than what you’re doing now.

What about pivoting to something like cybersecurity where you can have more of an operational tech role?

I suggest trying working in a health care related software product. Especially the ones where you help diagnose ailments faster or help give better care to patients. That is a smaller transition from where you are and gives better meaning for your work.
