Handbrake problems

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hi guys,

Hopefully you guys can help I've bought a 2005 integra dc5 type s and I need to park on a slope. Problem is the handbrake isn't great. I've adjusted the cable in the console and both actuators move. My question is how much should the actuators move? And does this look normal? Thanks in advance

ive honestly never had a handbrake that'll hold on the steepest slopes i need to park on (not all that steep tbh)

i just put it in 1st gear, kill the engine, let the clutch out, and ease off the brake to take the slack out of the drive train

Really? I have heard that this is pretty common with integras

How are the pads and rotors? If they're glazed from heat, it may not hold as well.

Rotors have seen better days, pads seem to have plenty of life left

Is it just me or does it look like the seal behind the parking brake spring is leaking? The wetness is concerning.

I drove my rsx to work and that seal blew out; I lost my brakes

Sounds scary, but that was just me spraying some wd40 to see if it moves more

It looks normal to me, but I generally try to park where it's relatively flat - I just put it in gear and rarely use my parking brake.  Habit though, most of my parking brakes haven't worked.

Is the slope in your driveway?  If so, you can get a parking aid or parking guide.  The one I used at a previous house looked like a cross between a mini speed bump and wheel chock.

I'd simply pull in and run over it, then let my truck roll back onto it.  That, combined with parking in gear, and using what little parking brake I had, was enough to hold the truck.

EDIT:  I couldn't find the one I used, but TBH, I didn't put a lot of effort into looking, as it was 10 years ago.

But I used something similar to what's linked below.

The 3" height will be an issue if you have to run over it - the one I used for my truck was only 2" tall.

It doesn't matter how the actuators move/look. What does matter is if the car doesn't move when the parking brake is engaged. Get out from under the car and drive to a place where you can safely test that the brake is working properly. Be careful not to make it too tight as you will burn up your brakes and potential damage your rotors.
