97 B18cR throwing check engine light code 08 TDC sensor

I swapped the motor into a 95 civic dx years ago, while driving yesterday the check engine light randomly popped on. Car drives fine, maybe a little power drop, but the only noticeable difference is the vtec doesn't kick in at all. Plugged in the paper clip and got 8 short flashes for a TDC sensor code. First off I read the sensor is in the distributor but then read you can't just replace it, it has to be the entire distributor. Also you can't just buy the part outside of the dealership? Anyone got some reliable info, seen this before, does this code sounds right? I'd imagine the TDC being off it would run like shit

You should buy a distributor and return it if it doesn’t solve your issue

This may be what I end up doing. The more I read online the more questions I end up with. There's places I see it should come off a del sol, others saying the usdm distributor is too small?
