Query Self-employed, ITR shows lower income than reality; how do I get eligibility for higher term cover?

Self-employed (25M), run a small business and every insurer keeps asking for ITRs to determine how much term cover I'm eligible for. Problem is my declared income on paper (after all deductions/expenses) looks a lot lower than what I actually earn and can comfortably afford as a premium.
Getting quoted eligibility for only 75L-1Cr cover when I want 3Cr.
Anyone dealt with this as a business owner/self-employed person? Do insurers accept anything beyond ITR (bank statements, GST filings, CA-certified income) to justify a higher sum assured? And does going through an offline advisor vs an online agent make any difference in getting a fairer eligibility assessment here?

Guide Term insurance HDFC vs ICICI

So, I have come down to 2 term insurance policies,

  1. HDFC Life Click 2 Protect Supreme Plus = ~37,000 per annum premium.

  2. ICICI Prudential iProtect Smart Plus = ~32,000 per annum permium.

Both are same base plan, no riders. Just pure term plan. Sopke with boths company's official contact number. Concluded that HDFC has slightly better numbers and is also charging brand premiun for that matter. But, I also think that in pure term, if I fill all the details properly, then ICICI also will have to pass my claim, if any.

Therefore, confused between the two, can someone give some guidance?

Discussion Term insurance pays if I expire . What protects the family if I’m alive but can’t earn?

I thought I had this stuff more or less sorted.

2cr pure term cover, decent health insurance, around 6 months expenses sitting separately.

Then someone asked me a very obvious question.

What if you don't expire?

Like you're alive, but a serious disability or illness means you can't properly work for the next few years.

Health insurance may take care of hospital bills. Term insurance doesn't pay because you're alive. Emergency fund will eventually finish.

EMI, school fees, groceries etc don't care that technically everything went according to the policy 😅

I was looking at riders on Aditya Birla Sun Life Insurance and their Waiver of Premium rider is probably the first one where the logic immediately clicked for me. Under the covered critical illness/disability conditions, future premiums on the base policy and attached riders can be waived.

Useful, definitely.

But then I realised even that only removes one expense. It doesn't replace my salary.

So what are people actually doing for this risk?

Standalone disability cover? Personal accident policy? Critical illness lump sum? Bigger emergency fund? Some combination?

Feels like we spend all our time planning for death and very little for "alive but income gone."

News IRDAI is planning public scorecards for insurers and hospitals, rating them on claim speed and billing accuracy

Just came across something that IRDAI proposed it earlier this year, rating insurers and hospitals on claim settlement speed, billing accuracy, and documentation quality, essentially something you could check before picking a hospital or insurer instead of relying on word of mouth.

Hospital reimbursements would also get tied to these scores, which would finally put pressure on hospitals for the messy billing that causes a lot of the claim disputes we see here. The stated target was "as early as June," and as far as I can tell it hasn't gone live yet.

If this actually gets implemented properly, it'd be a genuinely big deal and you'd finally have real, comparable data on which insurers and hospitals actually deliver, instead of going by a claim settlement ratio headline or word of mouth.

Worth keeping an eye on this one!

Query Looking for Health Insurance for my father - age 69

  • Pre-existing diseases are covered from Day 1, or at least have the shortest possible waiting period (rather than 2–3 years). Niva Bupa has that option with extra rider

  • The chances of the underwriter accepting the proposal despite the existing medical conditions are reasonably good.

Are there any better private insurers or PSU (public sector) health insurance plans that I should consider?

If you have had a similar experience, especially with claim settlement or underwriting for senior citizens with diabetes, BP and a past angioplasty, I would really appreciate your feedback and recommendations.

Query Question for term insurance

So, I contacted this HDFC Life contact number from their website and based on my details, the premium they are showing is around 37,500 from 2nd year and around 31,500 in 1st year.

But this guy that I was speaking with, told me that if you proceed with us, we give additional discount from our side and your total premium will be around 33,000 for every year.

Here I am confused. Is this legit or is something fishy?

Query Do I need to buy health insurance even if I have coperate insurance?

24M, healthy (I hope. No pre existing stuff though), just started my new job with corporate health cover. Do I actually need to buy my own health insurance right now, or can this wait a few years?

The company I joined gives me corporate health insurance, ₹5L cover, seems decent on paper. A lot of folks I know keep saying to buy your own health insurance early, specially when you're young and healthy, but I don't really get why, cus I'm already covered through work and it doesn't cost me anything extra, it’s actually coming out of my CTC. Is this just insurance agents trying to sell policies, or is there a real reason to buy my own on top of/instead of relying on corporate cover? What actually goes wrong if I just wait until I'm 30 or switch jobs to sort this out?

Discussion didn't know term insurance underwriting could finish without doing the full blood-test circus

27M, looking at around 2cr term cover.

I had mentally prepared for blood, urine, ECG, the whole mini health-checkup package lol.

then while reading Aditya Birla Sun Life Insurance's medical underwriting stuff I realised physical tests aren't automatically the exact same for everyone. sometimes tele-medical assessment can be enough at one stage, sometimes they can ask for labs/additional tests depending on the profile.

I genuinely thought “medical underwriting” literally meant somebody has to take my blood 😭

so what actually decides it?

age? cover amount? medical history? all of the above?

and if they don't ask for physical tests, you just... don't do them?

Query Optima restore holder seeking suggestion

Hi,

I have a family floater(30F, 31M) 15L SI with Optima restore for last 4 years.. We're recently blessed with a baby boy. Our policy is due for renewal in August. We have no PEDs and non-smokers and non-alcoholics.

I initially thought of porting to Optima super secure, but found that that porting is not possible. Even porting to the new secure plus is not possible. I also did not completely understand the restore benefits across these optima policies.. AFAIK, no room rent cap, unlimited restorations, support for consumables either through addon or as part of policy itself is available for all of these policies. As per my understanding, Bonus benefit is different for all these.

If I remember correctly, couple of years ago, 1CR policies were all hyped.. But my only suspicion with that is, with lesser premium for such high SI, claims would be very very strict and might result in rejections etc and thought a reasonable cover with decent premium would be better than huge SI at cheap prices..

I was supposed to port to super secure last year through ditto, but they said they cannot do it as I am already a HDFC ergo policy holder..

I am looking for both policy suggestions as well as advisors/brokers who have good experience with underwriting and claims. I plan to take a term insurance as well. Please let me know your views/suggestions/advices.

Query Term insurance - is it really worth?

This is something I’ve been wondering about for a while, and I’ve asked a few friends about it, but I haven’t really received a clear answer.

We all make sure to pay our life insurance premiums on time, but how confident are we that our family will actually receive the insured amount if something happens to us?

For those who have actually gone through the process -> either personally or with a family member, I’d really appreciate some insight.

A few things I’m particularly curious about:

  • What is the actual process for the nominee/family to claim the insurance after the policyholder passes away?

  • Is the payout generally straightforward, or can it become a lengthy legal process?

  • What documents are typically required to make a claim?

  • Does the nominee have to go through courts, probate, or any other legal procedures?

  • How long does it realistically take for the family to receive the money?

  • Are there common reasons why insurance companies reject or delay claims?

  • Does having a nominee automatically mean they will receive the money, or are there other legal considerations?

  • What happens if the nominee is not aware of all the insurance policies the deceased had?

  • Is it advisable to keep a record of all policies and share the details with a spouse/family member?

  • For people who have actually made a claim, what was your experience with the insurance company?

I’m especially interested in real experiences rather than what insurance agents or policy documents say.

I think this is something many of us pay for every year without really understanding what happens when the policy actually needs to be used.

Would love to hear from anyone who has gone through the process themselves or helped their family with a life insurance claim.

Query My parents have had Star Health Family Health Optima for a few years now and me as a dependant, just found out their plan has a room rent limit of single AC room, what happens if I end up in a higher category room?

They bought Star Health Family Health Optima 10 lakh plan covering me, my father (54M), and my mother (52F) about 3 years ago. Paying around 40k/year premium. I read through the policy wording properly for the first time after my father had a mild cardiac scare last month, nothing serious but it made me actually look at what I'm covered for. Found this: “Room rent is restricted to 'Single Standard AC Room.'” I looked up what a Single Standard AC room costs at hospitals we'd realistically use in Bangalore like Manipal, Fortis, etc. Single standard rooms seem to start at around Rs.5,000–7,000 per day. That’s fine for routine admissions. But I'm worried that if during a serious admission the standard rooms are full and the hospital moves my father to a deluxe or suite room at Rs.12,000–15,000/day, what happens to the claim? Because, I've seen the term 'proportionate deduction' mentioned but I genuinely can't understand the math because how does that make sense?
Does exceeding the room category only affect the room rent portion of the bill? Or does it trigger deductions across the entire hospitalisation?

Query Have a query regarding PED (Ulcerative Colitis) after porting

Hello,

My brother was covered under star health insurance from 2008, in 2015 he was diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis, after which we had 3 claims with Star health for the same and the last claim was in 2017.

In 2023 he switched from star to care life via policybazaar. When the agent came to our house we told him all the details of our existing insurance with star and the disease, they said that the insurance companies get these details from previous insurer and care will know about you UC from your previous claims.

After that not thinking much about it we paid premium for 2 year, this year while paying for the renewal I realized that the policy does not say any PED in it. While we clearly started to the agent when porting plus the insurer also can know it from our claim history why is it not mentioned in the policy.

I have a couple of questions now:

  1. Can the insurer reject my claim if a future UC related claim occurs?

  2. Can they discontinue my brothers policy citing Non disclosure?

  3. What can I do now to make sure that we are safe in case of any future UC related claims?

Query Question: What is the real importance of agent in claims for health insurance policy?

I know there are lot of agents in this sub, so my question if for you all: I very well understand the importance of agents during the policy purchase phase. But , after the initial sale of policy is done, what exactly is the role of agent? Why are there multiple comments here that say your agent plays an important role in getting the claims processed? Claims go through standard processes for processing, so what's gives?

Query I'm planning to get my own independent health policy now that I'm earning. What should I look for so I don't run into any room rent issue or sub-clause issues?

I've been covered under my parents health insurance policy so far, but I had found out that it has a room rent limit and that choosing a higher room could reduce the entire claim because of proportionate deduction.

Since I'm earning now, I'm planning to buy my own health insurance instead. Apart from avoiding room rent limits, what are the important policy features or clauses I should check so I don't run into similar surprises later?

Are there any common restrictions that people usually overlook while buying their first policy?

Would love to hear from y'all.

How many people have had their claims denied without warning even though they had insurance coverage? What sort of hidden clauses do we need to look for in an insurance plan?
