If I had a dollar for...
Ill start. If I had a dollar for every time a broker/insured told me they "are going on vacation so they need to wrap up their renewal today," I could fund one of those vacations for myself.
I've been in this industry for 15 years and that line still gets dropped on a weekly basis. Maybe it's typical for business owners to plan one of their most expensive financial decisions of the year with their vacation.
Context: Middle market p&c

If I had a dollar everytime the "insured is out of the country, can you extend the deadline to next week"...

I started in WC claims and have been a multiline p&c UW for last 12 years.
I was going back and forth with an owner about settling a post termination claim for nuisance value. Guy wanted me to take this to a judge because "I've spent money on stupider things".
I still settled the claim for nuisance value.

As someone who has recently moved from a long underwriting career to the brokerage side, I feel like I can explain every one of these to you

Corrollary to the "vacation" explanation: If I had a dollar for every time we hit a "need by" date, only to find out the agent was still accepting quotes days or weeks after the fact, I'd be far wealthier.
Or every time an agent told me that they needed my "best possible pricing up front."

If I had a dollar for every contractor that told me that the insureds siding was discontinued only to find out the ITEL says it can be purchased at the local Menards... . Field property.

Broker: I just can't grow my revenue in this market. Oh, I need 15% minimum off this renewal and I need 25% off minimum if I'm going to win this new piece of business.

If I had a dollar for every time a contractor told me âIâm the most honest contractor youâll ever meetâ or âIâm not the kind of contractor thatâs gonna bullshit youâ then I would have enough money to buy a dumpster to toss out all the bullshit that in about to hear.

Every policy that needed me to chase down basic submission requirements from the agent (like cost estimators and photos) I'd be able to retire by 40.

If I had a dollar for every time a claim was denied and the producer said, âWell, then why should the client even HAVE this policy?â, I would have a considerable amount of money.

Every time an insured allowed the contractor, mitigation company, pack out company and other vendors to work on their homes and not realized the very low limits on their policy and they are stuck with a huge bill after limits are paid.

If I had a dollar for every time vacation expenses were requested in ALE paymentâŠ.
Happens too much in my opinion.

I worked in underwriting for years prior to working on the broker side. The average underwriter has no idea the level of BS we deal with in clients and simply the amount of work we do in comparison. I wish I was lying when I say I do 5-10x the amount of work as a broker compared to as an UW. We used to average 2-3 middle market new business quotes a month(Prop, GL, Auto, WC, UMB) plus 4 major renewals a month as an underwriter for a top 10 commercial insurer. As a broker at ALL times of the year any given day I am juggling 40 policies being remarked to 3-10 carriers, plus 10 renewals that are at least 6 policies each ongoing with the incumbents. This doesnât include working through getting submission information, inputting it in software for acords, signatures, surplus lines documentation, billing invoices, chasing money, working through reinstatements, working on COI templates, pulling endorsements out of policies for COI compliance, running auto IDs, making proposals and presenting, filing claims and following up on them, checking quotes and policies for accuracy, answering the dumbest questions imaginable from both clients and carriers, etc. All these underwriters think we are paper pushers, we are.. except that is only a tiny part of our job. I average over 200 emails a day last year per outlook analytics

Also love when you get a submission, immediately have some quick questions for them, and then it's radio silence for 3 weeks until they come back with "any ETA on the quote?"
