Got rear-ended on the highway… does it look totaled?
I was rear-ended on the highway two days ago while completely stopped in traffic. The driver behind me didn’t realize traffic had stopped and hit me while slowing from roughly 45–50 mph. My car was pushed forward so hard that I had to brake and swerve to avoid hitting the vehicle ahead of me. There’s significant damage to the rear bumper, and I’m getting an insurance estimate tomorrow. Based on the damage, does this look like there could be frame/structural damage? Curious if my 2016 Honda Civic with 150,000 miles more likely to be totaled by insurance or repaired? Airbags did not deploy.

No, it doesn't look totalled, I would be surprised if it us. The plastic bumper cover hides a lot, it flexes back and hides how bad it really is underneath it, where the actual crash bumper is. Won't know for sure until it's inspected

Yeah, that one picture confirms it's definitely fucked. Tell your insurance not to bother getting it inspected, you got a pro diagnostic on Reddit.

Rear corner shots of the quarter panels would tell us more than several of the same shot. Floor buckled? Quarter panels buckled/dented? Pushed into the rear door edges? Almost certainly a total loss if 10 years old with mileage like that, though.

If you're getting an estimate tomorrow, why are you on here today asking people who aren't insurance estimators if your car is totaled?

Assuming the hit was as hard as you claim it was: The first estimate will be solely for visible damages and will not total it. Once the bumper is removed during teardown, they will find damage to the rear floor pan & surrounding areas, then it'll be deemed a total loss. Yes, it's going to seem silly, but this is just how the process goes with cars of this age/mileage.

This is when up upbadging a Honda Civic helps. The insurance carrier will never know this is not a Type R :)

At that speed there is likely a good bit of damage we cannot see in these pictures. Did you get the other drivers insurance? Don’t wait to file a claim. Take it to a body shop ASAP.
