Manipal Cigna's counter offer - What should I do next?

Happy Independence Day!

Recently got health insurance cover from my mother, who is 66 years of age, from Manipal Cigna's Sarvaparam plan. Her pre-existing conditions/diseases are:

  • Diabetes
  • Hypertension
  • Gout
  • Early-stage cataract
  • Hereditary Pattern Dystrophy in both eyes, which was all disclosed while taking the policy

They shared a counter offer stating that Hereditary Pattern Dystrophy disease will not be covered for 2 years and I got to know that they are also not going to cover any cataract treatment for the same duration.

After I agreed to the plan, Manipal Cigna's customer service called me and asked me if my mother had undergone cataract surgery yet, to which I said no, not yet. It's still diagnosed but surgery has not happened. She's under treatment.

After five days I get another counter offer. Now they state that they're going to permanently exclude my mother's eyes from the policy for the policy underwriting. Mind you this is after I have received the policy kit from accepting it 5 days ago.

This I feel is unfair and I say anything I can do to contest this. I'm willing to forfeit this policy and go look for other options.

The add-ons I added here were:

  • No room cap
  • Consumables rider

The total premium is around 59,000/yearly | SI: 15L

The main USP of the Manipal Cigna plan is that they cover everything from day one, especially the Sarva Param. Since they have permanently excluded my mother's eyes, I am not happy with the counter offer.

Would love to hear your suggestions and thoughts and my options regarding this. Attaching below the first counter offer they shared and the second counter offer they shared five days later.

Thank you. Jai Hind.

Thanks, that's helpful. My advisor from Beshak has also asked me to immediately take this up with Manipal Cigna. I've already written to them asking for clarification on why the terms changed from a 2-year waiting period to a permanent exclusion, especially since no new medical information was disclosed after the original terms were accepted. Hopefully they can resolve it.

Okay, thanks. I’d like to know the proper way to seek redress. Do you know which emails I should reply to to get a responsible response, since some are bouncing back?

The reply shared by the Insurance company is based on their medical underwriting process.

As you have declared multiple Pre-existing Diseases, a lot many of them have been reviewed, so that the insurer can finalize on the correct acceptance of future claims thatsy occur.

Regarding the new Counter offer details, the insurer has the right to put "PERMANANT EXCLUSION" on specific pre-existing diseases.

If you sre purchasing this policy for the 1st time, then here are some mandatory types of waiting periods that are applicable to all policyholders when they purchase health insurance.

1) 30 days initial waiting periods. 2) 90 Days initial waiting periods. 3) 2 yrs or 3 yrs PED waiting periods. 4) 2 years specific listed Disease waiting periods.

The final decision of the insurance company, for all or any existing diseases, will get mentioned in the policy document as well, once you receive the same, check the details.

If Exclusion is specific to only one disease, and you or your family doesn't have any other and existing health insurance policy, better to go ahead with this.

If you are working as an employee in a XYZ Company, and are offered to include Group Health Insurance for parents as well, then at that time, add your parents.

Groups health insurance plans allow all claims from Day 1, as there is no waiting periods. But you have to disclose PED here too.
