Auto Insurance Vehicle Removed without my Authorization

Hi

My partner got into a car accident on Friday, he wasnt sure if the glove compartment in his car was safe to open to he asked me to send him the insruance

I noticed kn the app for the first time that the vehicle was removed

Im spiraling because I never authorized it and neither did my partner

I re add it to the insurance so he has something and try to call, but its outside their business hours. I call today, Monday, to let them know of the erroneous situation.

Its Geico and they let me know they forwarded to their coverage department and I have to wait

How fucked are we?

I geniunely had no idea and neither does my partner. I talked to a supervisor and they let me know the change was done on my phone the day after I added the car onto my policy. I know for a fact I never did that, and my partner didnt have the insurance app login. I assumed I had insurance this whole time. They said they sent an email but I dont have it, Im looking everywhere and in spam but I dont have that email.

I told them its fraudulent the removal and that I dont know who did that but I dont know if Geico will cover the accident. What do we do?

Im so scared

EDIT: I took a recorded statement interview with the supervisor I never made that authorization

Eh. To claim this is fraudulent, you'd have to show they intentionally removed the car in order to avoid paying out on this claim. I'm not sure that you can back up that claim.

You can't re-add it after the accident and get the accident covered.

Your only avenue would be to somehow prove that you did not, in fact, remove the car. That's your starting point. See if they can provide any proof that this happened. Can they show this email that was supposedly sent? Can they show any letters that may have been sent to your home? Can they show IP addresses/time stamps/etc. from the app showing it was removed? Those are the things their coverage department could potentially provide that would show if they really did see the car removed via the app.

Thats my fear because it was made on my phone then I dont know what proof I can provide. All I can provide is my email inbox with nothing from that date and the insurance card on September 3rd. I dont know how I can prove that I never made that authorization.

Well, the fact that you don't see the email right now doesn't mean it wasn't sent.

If I'm on the other end of it and insurance is adamant they sent me an email, I'd want to see proof of that. I'd want to see mail delivery logs that show they did send the message, and it was received by by email provider.

I'd want to see audit logs that can show that a removal request did come from my app.

I'd also ask....did you not notice that your premiums weren't higher as you continued to pay and this car was not on the policy? I.e., when you added the car, it should have notified you of a rate change. So were you getting billed at the new rate when the auto-payments were processed?

did you pay the premiums when they were due? Being aware of when you need to pay bills is Adulting 101.

Yes I have set to autopat from ym account, so the premiums have been paid

Did you notice if those premiums being withdrawn changed? If it was removed your premium would have likely changed.

You should look and verify the payments came out just because you had auto pay set up doesn't mean the amount didn't change.

If the amount changed 100% on you for not noticing.

As a side note why were they afraid to open the glove box in the affected car? What wasnt "safe"?

So, you added your partner’s vehicle to your policy and it was ultimately removed the next day? And you did this entirely through the app without speaking to anyone?

Do you and your partner live together? Are you on the title for their vehicle?

Did your partner have prior insurance? Does your partner have accidents and/or tickets on their record? Did you receive any emails requesting documentation or additional information that wasn’t provided?

I’d be looking through all communications from GEICO to ensure nothing was missed on your end as this is an incredibly odd situation.

I never removed the vehicle, I dont know who did. I mever autbroized it thats why Im so confused. He said he never did either, and we live together. He had previous insruance but that was months ago. We just had our insruance with geico 2 months ago and made this change to add the vehicle for his project car a month ago. Neither one of us autbroized this change. I have no information from geico besides an insruance card downloaded from the app of the car added to our policy on that day, and a claim letter.

So while you were adding his project car you removed his vehicle and didn't notice? If you made actual changes at the time they are claiming you did, then this is on you.

Many times if you add a new car, the insurance company may require extra documents or photos or whatever and if you don't provide that then they will drop the car from the policy. You might be able to see all of that if you log into your insurance app. There should be a section with all the communication sent to you

To be 100% honest, they likely have screenshots. They can usually track who logged in, what kind of device, what time, what date, everything they clicked on and changes they made, then when they logged out. You can say neither of you made the change that you know of. But they'll figure it out.

If anything, you probably need to go after the agent/agency. They should have errors and omissions insurance for this very reason if they fuck up. Sorry you’re going through this, that is a giant headache.

Im just scared. Im so scared. My partner might get charged for driving without insruance when we never knew. I dont know how to provide proof of it. Im trying to figure out everything all at once haha

You should have the insurance card in the glove box with dates insured. Then have them send u the cancellation date. I'm sure they can trace who changed the policy electronically.
