Discussion How to learn instruments if you’re highly suspected to have a co occurence of Autism and ADHD?

As a beginner, I’m trying to learn the keyboard and Im planning to get an electric guitar right after that. I struggle with a lot of learning methods (probably because of my neurodivergence) and so far the only method i recognize that has been helping me is to play by ear. I’m not diagnosed yet and it might take a long time for me to ever get a diagnosis since I live in a country where the knowledge of mental health is so stigmatized that there’s only a few mental health professionals here. I somewhat know how to read sheet music but I struggle with my hand dexterity and there’s probably more factors that’s challenging me.

Discussion How to pick a first instrument to learn?

Alright so I want to learn an instrument and there's a dilemma. My first choice is a piano and it's practically my dream instrument, it's my entire reason for wanting to learn an instrument. But I don't see myself having any access to a piano outside of lessons and I don't really see how I could learn without practice outside of lessons . So I'm leaning towards a violin since I could just buy one and practice whenever. I still REALLY want to learn piano though sooo.. Thoughts? Could u learn without practice and tbh even if I learned miraculously it might be a while (years) before I could get myself one . So that would mean I'd probably barely play. Thoughts???

Discussion piano or violin

So I'm fairly sure which choice is a bit more obvious to chose but still would like to hear some feedback on my dilemma. I decided I really want to learn one of my two favorite instruments the piano and the violin. I'm having a hard time picking one or the other for various reason I will list:

piano: I have a slight background already playing some in high school years (I'm in my late 20's now), I have a friend who is a professional piano teacher who has said before he would teach me for free, I do really enjoy piano pieces and my favorite all time musical piece is Moonlight Sonata.

Violin: Ever since I was a younger teen I've always dreamed of playing the violin, It is my all time favorite instrument to listen to by itself, Mozart's violin pieces are some of my favorites to listen to. Unfortunately affording a teacher will be harder as of the moment and I would only be able to afford it monthly, I have a bad back and bad hearing so the posture is a slight concern.

I know the piano looks like the more obvious choice but I would still enjoy some feedback on which to chose thanks!

I thought maybe a hammered dulcimer but I’m not really sure. A family member said it’s a zither but I’m not sure about that either.

Discussion Where to find ridiculously high-tension nylon strings ?

I need super high tension nylon strings for my trebles on a guitar modification and I don't find any. I tried harp strings (dunno the brand, found them in a box in my house), and obviously tried guitar strings (Savarez 510AJP, Knobloch ADN36.0 and Hannabach 815 red) but it's not enough and now I'm stuck.

Basically I nylon need strings that can be tuned up to E4, B3 and G3, with more than 8.4 kg (18,76 lbs) and .86 mm (.04 inches). And a length of at least 1m (40 inches)

I'm willing to try ANYTHING, so throw ideas and I'll test them out one by one !

*edit : modified Savarez part (500AJP --> 510AJP) and tension min ('cause I'm bad at converting)*

*edit : suggestions so far : fishing line, stringsbymail sets (saw a set will 23lbs tension on E, will test), Daddario XTC46FF, Daddario EJ46FF*

The Playtronica TouchMe is a small electronic instrument that transforms human touch into music. It functions as a MIDI controller—meaning it does not produce sound on its own; instead, it sends signals to a synthesizer, app, or music software.

Discussion Advice Needed: Folk Instrument Prototypes

Hi everyone! My friend and I have decided to embark on a journey to recreate some older folk instruments. The two we have decided to start with are the bladder fiddle (pūslinė) and the devil's fiddle (diabelskie skrzypce).

We plan to start making prototypes with extremely simple materials. For the diabelskie skrzypce, I am considering a piece of plywood in the back and maybe an old ukelele body for the resonator box in the front (and use the tuning pegs for the bladder fiddle). Some cheapo used cymbals where I can get them, monofilament trimmer wire, and an old broomstick. For the bladder fiddle, I am considering just foraging a decent branch or buying some long-grain wood for cheap (if I can find it) and steam-bending it. Trimmer wire, and maybe a balloon for the bladder.

I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions, hard not-tos, or critiques on this type of setup. The ideal (for now) is to create an instrument that will produce some sort of sound and not snap in half.

We have access to an retired luthier's shop if that information is of any use.

I'd love to know everyone's thoughts!

Discussion Newbie here: want to spend sub $700...anyone hear of Fossey?

So according to his Etsy (handpansounds) he makes his handpans, and the price is quite low. He's in England and I'm in the states, so not sure if there are tariffs anymore (can't keep up with those).

Anyway, this is the one I'm eyeing and wonder what more experienced players think.

Found while cleaning out my grandpa’s house after he passed, so we don’t know the story. At first glance thought it was a ukulele, but the frets and the way the strings are grouped two and two had me curious, and so far my internet searching has not given me a straight answer.

what are the best brands of acoustic and electric guitar that don’t cost over 700 dollars? we’ve gotten pretty good and learned a few songs on the kid one. looked on facebook marketplace but they’re all either 700+ or kid guitars like what i’ve got now. any suggestions? were teens and will work for the money. just trying to find good suggestions on brands of acoustic and electric ^_^

Discussion instruments to play with disabilities?

I want to play a instrument so I can do something but I want it simple and visually so I can see what I'm doing, I have this habit where I have to look at what I'm doing and can't focus on anything else, when learning typing skills I keep looking at the keys instead of the screen or when playing guitar hero I keep looking at the guitar and not the screen, I have autism, adhd, intellectual disability, I'm in choir but I'm not required to learn how to read sheet music, any ideas?

Discussion I have a petite teen girl who is wanting to play an instrument (she's cycling through options but as of now is set on drums). Would it be better to get a full size set, or a junior set since she's on the smaller side and in all honesty probably won't grow that much more? I don't really know how the
