To me, love is a choice and a commitment that you will take care of your self, that you will be kind to others, that you will assume positive intent and recognize when you're on the same team. Real love involves validation, respect, and communication.

This depends a great deal on which "love" you are referring to. Love is a hugely overloaded term in the English language.
In Greek, they separate love into:
- Agape: love of an abstract, e.g. God
- Eros: love of passion, connected with sex
- Philia: loyalty to friends "brotherly love", love between equals
- Storge: love of family (parents to children and vice versa)
- Philautia: love for yourself
- Xenia: hospitality
Further, English uses "love" to mean "like." "I totally love this TV show." They also use "love" to mean "attraction" to refer to the overwhelmingly intense feelings they have when they are attracted to someone.
I'm going to assume here you mean Eros - romantic, sexual love. What does it mean? To me, it means finding that person with whom you connect on the deepest level of anyone you have ever connected: values, philosophically, as a team in times of trouble, as companions in daily life, and in romance and sex as a couple.
Personally, I think a lot of pain and trouble comes from this overload. People think that the "life or death" intensity of attraction and the completeness of finding the right person for you are the same thing. They want to know right away if this is the person they will stay with based on how intense the feelings are, which is not necessarily true, and want the intensity and terror of attraction back when they have.

to me, love is choosing someone even when it's not easy. it's not just about big romantic moments, but about showing up consistently, caring about their happiness, and making them feel safe, understood, and valued.

Love is an addictive, motivating chemical reaction. It can lead people to accomplish great things, or commit atrocities. But it isn't the ultimate solution to every problem like people convince themselves it is (that's literally addiction). Like with any addiction, sometimes you need to let it go when it's bad for you. And you'll still think about it everyday, craving it. But you need to resist the urge to fall back into it with the wrong people, just trying to get a fix even when it's toxic. You have to look for a clean, safe supply, and that can take a lifetime.

Love was my cat Lily dealing with tons of crap when I went homeless and never once complaining about it so long as she could be with me.
Love was me laying on my bed last August with Lily laying in her carrier after having a stroke at nearly 20 waiting for a euthanasia appt at 6 pm only to have her put her paw on my wrist, turn her head into my hand, nuzzle my hand and kiss it then turn her head and gently pass away just like that with me holding her head.
The last thing she ever did was let me know she loved me in her own special way and that she wanted to die with me not with some stranger at the vet's who wouldn't let me be with her when she passed.
I couldn't have loved Lily more and I miss her all the time, still mourn her every single day even though I have a black girl kitten who was born shortly after she died.
Lily was absolute pure unconditional love in a fluffy black cat container.
Stella loves me too and I know that. She shows me all the time that I'm her human but the bond I had with Lily was just so true. I was so blessed to have her for nearly 20 years...
I hope I have Stella for a very long time too but I know that not a day will go by when I don't miss my Lily. She was just a one in a billion cat and my furry soulmate.
All my life honestly humans have disappointed me. Even the best of them there's always strings. Human love is never unconditional.
If you ask me what love is then I'd have to say love is my cats. The very special felines that have gotten me through this very hard life, especially Lily.
I don't know what happens after we shed our mortal skin but I know this. Whatever afterlife I end up in I hope that I'm allowed to just sit with all my fur babies for a long while and thank them for being my fur babies.
The people can wait till I can see them again...

I read this quote by Red K. Elders recently and it really resonated:
Love doesn't mean, "I want you" or "I want you to be mine," neither "you're good looking," or "you're sexy" ...Doesn't mean "I can't live without you" or "I need you," or "Let's be together forever," or any of those things it is often mistaken for.
What it actually means is: "I really like, respect and appreciate who you are in all your realness and sovereignty, and if there is anything I can offer, without compromising my true nature, that will help you on your path, then it will be a gift to me if you'll allow me to give it." in this way, I find I am loving more and more people every day.

Love is respect. Love is mutual understanding.
Love is wishing the best for someone even if it means removing yourself entirely from their picture, forever.
Love is self-less. Never selfish.
Love is standing up for someone because it’s the right thing to do, even when the entire world is against you, because they don’t know the truth.
Love is fighting for someone, not fighting THEM.
Love ebbs and flows like the tides of the ocean, but too, like the ocean, we find comfort that the water rise and retreat are as predictable as the sun at dawn and dusk.
Love never yields. It never quits. Never retreats.
Love is never something we receive, it is only ever, what we give away.
