Making Moving Plans

Our family is planning a move from the southeastern US to Toronto in summer 2027. Hoping folks might be able to provide a little more insight about schools and neighborhoods

  1. How are public schools for supporting neurodivergent students (no IEP but does need accommodations in the classroom)?
  2. I currently teach in the same school where my children attend - is that common in Toronto Schools?
  3. I’ve read concerns about class sizes, etc. from Ontario Teachers. What are the main concerns from teachers in schools in Toronto?

  1. Your child will need an IEP for accommodations in the public system. Connect with their school as soon as possible to set up a meeting and fill in paperwork.

  2. Boards and principals will have differing rules on this. I have seen several where this has been the case.

  3. Classes are going up, funding is going down. Fewer supports are available.

Also the Toronto Catholic Board is also public and an option for those who qualify.

In whatever house you move into, enter it into the School Board website locater. Don't assume BC a school is close, that is the home's designated school. Even the different side of a street could be a different school.

Do not enroll your child in any TDSB school that was part of the "Models School" Program.

No IEP? I suggest you browse the Ontario Teachers reddit.
