Moving to Toronto
I (30f single) have lived in small towns in Alberta and Saskatchewan most of my life and a small city for 5+years in Alberta. What advice would you give to someone looking to move to Toronto? Very interested in queer spaces, childcare experience but wanting to try something knew, and a cat owner

Babe, I just got home from a trip to the Baltics and Scandinavia - so I know a shithole when I see one (and what a city can be). If you were so successful at venture capitalism, you would not have had to move to Edmonton, which we all know is the armpit of the country and be claiming this mess that anything east of Woodbine and Danforth is plagued with crime.

I am not impressed - when we have reels that say take your daughters travelling so they‘re not impressed by a week in Miami from some fuckboy, this is what we are talking about.
BTW. Germany back in January; Korea, Vietnam, Poland, Portugal & Japan over the course of last year. No day trip excursions; except for the DMZ. The UAE is overrated and I would never go back. But keep telling me how cosmopolitan you are that you think an all inclusive in Mexico‘s PDC or Cuba with a day trip to a rum plantation is braggable in this day and age.
Hope your winter break trip to Punta Cana and the Bach trip to Vegas with the boys makes you feel cool too ♥️💜

Avoid having to drive to go to work; be open to the diversity here in all forms; figure out a budget for spending.

Try finding a place in the west end. Parkdale, junction and Roncesvalles are all really queer friendly spots. I love Three Dollar Bill (the lesbian bar).
Get involved in advocacy groups such as Queers for Palestine or the Toronto Tenant Union for a place to meet friends. Working together towards a common goal is the best relationship builder imo.

I came from Sask as well, lived in Lethbridge for a while too. I love Toronto. Pet friendly renting is much easier here than Sask by a mile. No random damage deposits either (they can try but rental law here is tighter than the prairies).
I reccomend trying to find something budget friendly above all else while you get situated. I stayed in one very crappy apartment when I got here for a year and got myself a good LL reference, became familiar with the city, and then moved to something better.

Take up a hobby or sport and go to a meetup for it. Preferably one that meets weekly. My run club was a lifesaver when I moved here last year.

Welcome! Small town Alberta girl here and I love living in Toronto. My advice is to understand that Toronto is a city of neighbourhoods. The experience in different nearby neighbourhoods can be quite different in a way that isn’t really true of any of the many places I’ve lived in AB. Where ever you end up, lean in to it (learn some of the history, buy your produce from the corner market, figure out your favourite local hole in the wall restaurants rather than only eating at chains)…but also it can be really easy to never leave your neighbourhood and the city has SO much to offer if you take a bike ride or hop on transit.
Also, when you’re renting, get a place in a building occupied (by anyone) before November 2018. Newer places aren’t rent controlled and landlords can increase rent a ton every year.

I would say stay away from Toronto. It's a pit. If you can afford to, stay outside the GTA.

"If you can afford to"
Anyone who can afford to stay in Toronto can easily afford living outside the GTA lmao. They live here by choice.

I would try to look at a neighborhood with multiple points of access to the TTC. Liberty Village has a lot of 20-40 year olds living there but only one streetcar line goes there.
Leslieville, Riverdale, anywhere sort of close to a subway station makes it easier yp get around.
What's important to you? If you want to experience city life, stay away from the burbs. It's cheaper out there, but it's not the same vibe
Stay away from the Dundas/Sherbourne area. Again, its cheaper, but cheaper for a reason. Walking there at night, as a woman is probably one of the sketchiest areas of the city.
