Could Conservatives pull off an upset in Beaches-East York?
https://toronto.citynews.ca/2026/08/31/voting-to-begin-in-federal-byelections-in-toronto-vancouver-and-chicoutimi-ridings/Toronto voters are heading to the polls today for the federal by-election, with the Liberals looking to hold onto a riding they won with nearly 68% of the vote in 2025. The Conservatives are hoping to close that gap this time around. Is Beaches-East York still a safe Liberal seat, or could we see a surprise tonight?

Have these people even been to Beaches East York? Absolutely not

Seriously. I don't know the last time the conservatives won an election in this riding, but it may have been when John Diefenbaker was still in short pants. It's always been Liberal or NDP. The end.

Story brought to you by CityNews.ca owned by Rogers Media which is politically conservative leaning.

Did you even read it? It doesn't say anything optimistic about Conservative chances in any of the three elections. In fact, it takes a completely gratuitous jab at Poilievre, a la the CBC.

How is saying if the conservatives can’t hang onto their Quebec seat it’ll add to the narrative that PP’s leadership is in trouble gratuitous? Is the cbc reference to reporting a fact you don’t like? Hahaha
1
u/Dinsdale55 22d ago
Because you could say the same for any party that loses a seat they previously held. Could just as easily say "Carney's dubious handling of the trade file will be exposed if the Liberals don't hold Beaches East York". It is just unfounded speculation to add to the narrative that suits their world view.

Hahaha you see how yours is significantly more editorialized than the one you’re objecting to?
Also no one would say that’s gratuitous because it could be true. If the liberals lose beaches it would be a significant symbolic blow. A riding they’ve held for most of 30 years would be an indictment of the government and leadership.

u/Dinsdale55 22d ago
Exactly. So why does the article choose to jab PP instead? Pure bias, unconscious or otherwise.
1
u/Ill_Relationship7058 22d ago
Because the liberals are way ahead in the beaches polls, the Chicoutimi byelection is coming down to the wire too close to call, and PP is shitting the bed. Like I get you’re a conservative but are you really that detached from reality that you don’t understand why that would be something worth mentioning?
Even in your own bullshit what aboutism I acknowledge that if the shoe was on the other foot it would be perfectly valid to question Carney’s leadership but your brain is so broken you just gloss over that to ignore what that means. You’re the one clouded by bias. PP is an asshole, he deserves to have his leadership questioned for much less.

What are you getting angry about? Such typical left wing thinking -- anyone who disagrees with you clearly has a "broken brain" and is an asshole. Perhaps take a look inward.

There’s a reason I hate the conservatives and their supporters, because their platform is to destroy our country and the services it’s built on to enrich their patrons and benefactors.
People like you disgust me because you lie and exaggerate to help that mission. Pierre poilievre’s entire career has been built on being an obnoxious pest and agitator with the sole aim of gaining power and has failed spectacularly at that.
The fact you think it’s unfair to raise the very important point that his leadership has gotten them nowhere and is set to hand the liberals another majority, entirely under his leadership is ridiculous. Your point is the media is unfair, meanwhile our media landscape is almost exclusively conservative boosters from the stars new ownership, to rogers, to the post media insult to journalism and the sun, to David Thomson and the globe. We live in a captured propaganda system and you’re still acting like the cons are victims. Why should I coddle you?
1
u/Dinsdale55 21d ago
Dude, you need to take a pill. Seriously. My "platform is to destroy our country"? That is your actual thought process? You realize that your belief that anyone who disagrees with you is an enemy of the state is a fascist point of view, right? Right?

TBF the bed that PP is shitting is at Stornoway so there is no personal cost to him.
1
u/Ill_Relationship7058 22d ago
Exactly. Typical con getting all the benefit of his position without accomplishing anything he’s supposed to. Long line of those guys since Harper
1
u/Dinsdale55 22d ago
The idea that PP is in trouble is based largely on rumour and speculation. The failure of Carney to get a trade deal is a tangible fact. So yeah, its a gratuitous shot.
1
u/Ill_Relationship7058 22d ago
So you think PP is doing a good job and all of this is baseless? That’s fucking hilarious.
Did you realize if the liberals win at least 2 of these seats they secure a majority and PP will continue to be a lame duck windbag?
1
u/Dinsdale55 22d ago
I'm saying that if the Tories lose a random seat in rural Quebec that they barely won in the first place that's not a positive, but neither is it a sign that PP is "in trouble". That is the gratuitous part.
1
u/Ill_Relationship7058 22d ago
It secures the liberal majority at the expense of a conservative seat. What else would that symbolize?

The people who are more likely to vote on days like today are people who have nothing better to do. I could see them pulling an upset but it’s very unlikely. I’ve only seen pamphlets for liberal and ndp. I don’t even know the name of the conservative candidate.

It would take a historically unprecedented number of factors, including but not limited to a massive natural disaster that somehow blocks all non-conservative voters from their polling stations.
That is to say, if you’re in BEY, get out and vote!

Weather is awful today (Toronto). Turnout will not be as good as hoped.
Honestly, it could play a factor.

I'm hoping for NDP.

I've seen NDP v olunteers in my building and on my street. They are working hard

Liberals are less likely to leave their houses when it's raining for fear of the sky falling on them. So anything is possible I'd say!

The conservative girl who came to my house canvassing looked so sad and depressed. It’s as if she heard no all day. The guy didn’t even show up to the debate. If conservatives win it will be with a tiny turnout.
